A61 Missing space on hard drive

My A61 model 9137W16 has a 80Go hard drive with 69 available. According to Vista I only have about 7 Go of free space. However, I have counted up only 37Go of used space. I have also used "WinDirStat" to calculate how much space I've used. It reckons I've only used 37 Go, but that 32 Go is taken up with something "unknown". What is that? How can I get that space back as I have very little installed.....Otlook 2007, OpenOffice and an accountancy program.
Thanks for your advice and help.

Re: A61 Missing space on hard drive

birdy, welcome to the forum,

A ThinkVantage utility called Rescue and Recovery may have been nibbling away at your free space. R&R has a standard factory setting so that it will back-up your system every wednesday around mid-day.
Go into start-programs-think vantage-rescue and recovery, click on show all back-ups and you will see when and how many back-ups have been made. If you wish to you can delete the back-ups from R&R. You can also cancel or change the scheduled back-ups if you wish to.

Andy

Re: A61 Missing space on hard drive

Andy,
Thanks, you were spot on. There were 6 backups. At first I couldn't delete the first backup ever made as the system said that I didn't have enough disk space to do so?! So, went back in chronological order and managed to delete the backups one after the other......took forever. Now have 40 Go available instead of 7.
Thanks again for your help!
