M6417-12U after BIOS flash is dead

I tried the normal CLR CMOS and boot block bios recovery by renaming the bin file to amiboot.rom and the mobo does not even seek on the floppy.  This happened on multiple machines.   All were identical configurations.  Two worked 100% the rest failed.  Any hints or tips on additional recovery possible ?

Re: M6417-12U after BIOS flash is dead

I would follow the boot block recovery steps provided in the User Guide.  Renaming the bin file to amiboot.rom is most likely your problem.  I would make a BIOS diskette or CD and not change the filenames.

Recovering from a POST/BIOS update failure

If power to your computer is interrupted while POST/BIOS is being updated (flash update), your computer might not restart correctly. If this happens, perform the following procedure commonly called Boot-block Recovery.

1. Turn off the computer and any attached devices, such as printers, monitors, and external drives.

2. Unplug all power cords from electrical outlets, and open the computer cover. Refer to "Opening the cover" in the Hardware Installation and Replacement Guide.

3. Access the system board. Refer to "Accessing system board components and drives" in the Hardware Installation and Replacement Guide.

4. Locate the Clear CMOS/Recovery jumper on the system board. Refer to "Identifying parts on the system board" in the Hardware Installation and Replacement Guide.

5. Remove any cables that impede access to the Clear CMOS/Recovery jumper.

6. Move the jumper from the standard position (pins 1 and 2) to pins 2 and 3.

7.Close the computer cover and reconnect any cables that were disconnected. Refer to "Completing the parts replacement" in the Hardware Installation and Replacement Guide.

8. Reconnect the power cords for the computer and monitor to electrical outlets.

9. Insert the POST/BIOS update (flash) diskette into drive A, and turn on the computer and the monitor. 10. The recovery session will take two to three minutes. After the update session is completed, there will be no video, and the system will automatically reboot. Remove the diskette from the diskette drive.

11. Repeat steps 2 through 5.

12. Replace the Clear CMOS/Recovery jumper to its original position.

13. Close the computer cover and reconnect any cables that were disconnected.

14. Turn on the computer to restart the operating system.

Re: M6417-12U after BIOS flash is dead

Thanks for the suggestion.  This unit only has USB floppy and  DVD drive.  This procedure using the DVD drive does not work.  Used the ISO image and the exact procedure above.  The mobo simply BEEPS 2-5-1 in that order all short beeps.  I did not have a USB floppy handy to try that today.  My hopes are low that that will make any difference.  But I will try that tomorrow.  Stay tuned. :smileywink:
