IBM S50 8184 640 GB Sata Drive

Hi, have just installed a 640 GB Sumsun Drive in my S50 8184 and what ever I do I can't get it to see more than 137 GB in disk management.

I have update the bios to 2AKT51AUS which is the latest I could find and have also upgrade XP to SP3

What could be wrong or hat have I missed?

Hi,

We are also having this problem!

And we solved it! Please disconnect the PATA DVD-Drive and try again!

It seems it isn't possible to connect both SATA and PATA devices in the computer.

We haven't installed a SATA DVD-Device yet but maybe this does work?

Hi,

You just need a sata data cable, I got one from msy for $2 -  you can use an exisitng power connection.

Beware if you attempt to install anything above 500GB, XP will not see it - Tiemen's advice came to late to try as I had already setup my S50 with an spare 80GB IDE drive.  A friend has installed a 200GB sata without any problems and he did not have to disconnect his IDE drive.

Thanks mikemix, I didn't realize that the mobo supported SATA. I bought a SATA 80gb hard drive and used a single IDE cable to run the DVD drive. all's well now. Many thanks.

I have another computer with this problem but this time disconnecting the PATA didn't solve the problem.

I think it needs a BIOS update, I'll do this and I will let you know!
