S50 8417-4AG with Windows XP pro SP3. Unable to access bios.

Good afternoon

I’m in need of help again. This time it’s about not being able to access the Setup Utility. I’ve had continuous problems with access since I tried to determine whether or not the SATA connectors were enabled (see earlier post) when I attempted to install a SATA dvd rewriter. Plus, now, the floppy disk doesn’t work & I suspect that that’s something to do with the utility settings.

The facts are that on powering up & in spite of pressing the relevant keys for the Utility, the first thing to appear is the Windows logo every time & in every circumstance. No amount of pressing keys over many startups (eg Enter, F1, F2, Ctrl+S, Ctrl+Alt+S, Crtl+Alt+Esc, ad infinitum as per the forums/websites I’ve looked at for a solution) has led me into the Utility. The nearest I came to accessing was by unplugging the keyboard, powering up & waiting for the error message ‘no keyboard connection’. I cut the power, replugged the keyboard & powered up again. On came the Setup screen inviting me to press ‘Enter’, which I did. After about 5 seconds, a new screen appeared that lasted for no more than 2 seconds, but told me that pressing Ctrl+S would get me into the Utility.

It didn’t, of course, nor did the technique of disconnecting the hard drive, powering up & proceeding as before.

Hence this request. I’d be very pleased if anyone can provide a lasting solution to this problem.

Good afternoon

I am delighted to tell you that my bios access problems have been resolved. I 'bit the bullet' and removed the power cable, released the CMOS battery, changed the jumpers from 1-2 to2-3 & waited for 2 or 3 minutes. When I had put it all back together, I powered up & went into bios without any hesitation. I'm fully operational!
