Why does T420 toolbar show only eight icons?

I must have pushed some wrong button today but suddenly an "arrowed pillar" appeared on my toolbar and now it shows only 8 icons at a time. To see the rest and hop between programs I need to push the arrows. I don´t get this blockage to go away and most of the toolbar is black and empty anyhow. Silly but irritating. How do I get the stopper off?

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Notification Area Icons an option for showing all icons in the notification area: "Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar".

You can also right click on the taskbar>Properties>under Notification area click Customize

There's a box to check at the bottom of the screen that says:  Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar
