We found a bug in the registration process. The default is to English on the language selector on the registration page, but if you make any mistakes during registration (applying for a name that is already taken, not having your password meet security criteria or not matching as it has to be entered twice, or your email not match,etc) then the form resets and asks you to correct the fields where there is an error.
When it resets, it defaults to German, which is the first language on the list. If the user doesn't notice and reset to English, they wind up with their profile set to German, which is what I suspect happened in your case.
We've logged the issue and it is being worked, and hopefully will be cleared up soon as a permanent fix.
