Re: Here we go!

kvirtanen,

Maybe you can take a picture of the keyboard and share the picture link here instead? Thanks !

Re: Here we go!

Another option would be to remove the keyboard, instructions here under CRU removal, and search the Lenovo support site for the FRU number found on the underside of the keyboard.  Start by searching for the number on this site.

Andy

Hi guys, thanks for chiming in!

I took a photo of the keyboard. It's temporarily hosted at my website at: http://wirtanen.tk/temp/IMG_20120118_202924.jpg

If needed, I'll look up the FRU part number under the keyboard too.

The quality of the photo is horrible, sorry about that — I shot it with a cell phone. To me it doesn't seem like a US layout, what do you think?

Re: Here we go!

I'm going to take a wild guess, as I've never seen this version of the keyboard, and say it's possibly the U.S. English (International, with a Euro symbol) keyboard - :dunno:  :smileyfrustrated:

Hopefully someone will recognise it?

Andy

Re: Here we go!

The plot thickens... according to a post on this very same forum US international is quite different from mine: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Keyboard-US-English-international-with-an-EU-s...

Re: Here we go!

Oh well, glad I said it was a guess :smileytongue:

I'd pop it out and check the FRU number, it's probably the quickest way to put us all out of our misery :smileywink:

Re: Here we go!

[ Edited ]

Mystery -- at least partly -- solved. The FRU number is 45N2160. For some reason I couldn't find it from the page AndyP gave. I googled it and found a match from Lenovo's Keyboard parts page for T & W models:

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=PD010629

It's a Dutch keyboard, at least according to that page. I must say I hardly recognize this as a Dutch keyboard. I've typed on a Dutch keyboard a lot, and this looks quite different. I've never seen the degree symbol, plusminus sign or the em dash on a Dutch keyboard.

EDIT: I found something that might explain why the keyboard looks so strange. According to Wikipedia (which is back "online" again : ), the Dutch layout is historical and seldom used. -- Most computers in The Netherlands use the US International layout instead.

I now sort of understand why the DOA folks ended up with this keyboard. I'm Finnish, my former X201T was equipped with a Finnish keyboard, and I actually brought up my confusing experience with the Finnish Lenovo branch with the DOA folks quite a few times. The electronic service calls I made were in English, and I even handled all my business in English with Lenovo NL and the German DOA company because I'm not Dutch.

But I live in the Netherlands. :smileywink:

We need to remember that not all Lenovo customers live or reside in their home countries -- Lenovo has an international warranty just for this purpose. If customers need to get a part replaced (or the whole computer for that matter) -- in my opinion -- people working for Lenovo should make sure the part is of the proper localization. In ambiguous cases, such as mine, in retrospect, I wish I had been asked about it. This fact popped into my mind after I had heard the laptop was already ordered -- before that I didn't realize this would be a problem.

DOA business, it seems, is a bit more complicated than standard warranty issues.
