lindz, welcome to the forum,
according to support the T6* keyboard will not fit the T40* / T50* because their documentation has other part numbers / information. If you read the thread and the blog you will see that the keyboards are technically different. That aside they are interchangeable without problems.

Mark Hopkins does alot of good work in this forum and has helped a lot of people. Sorry that you miss him, you joined at the weekend when he's not around, (probably enjoying his weekend).

lindz wrote:The exact words were "the T60 keyboard is not compatible with the T500". Since that was a message left on my answering machine I did not get an opportunity to ask why that was contrary to all the forum posts. Perhaps I was just being blown off.
I shall take the leap and order (and pay for even though my machine is less than one month old) the keyboard.
OK, so the tech msg only specified the T60 keyboard and not the T61. I wonder if there is any difference between a T60 and T61 keyboard.
So you will be ordering a T60 or T61 keyboard? NMB, ALPS or Chicony? I wonder if the T60's are stil available?
Thanks,
Ole

I think what people forget here is any new laptop is known to have flaws. One thing people do not mention with the T400 and the T500 is that they offer improvements over the older generations. In particular the T500 possesses a fairly high powered graphics card (ATI 3650). Lenovo is offering significantly higher performance (relative to the other business model laptops) and should be commended for this.
Yes Lenovo made some changes to the keyboard and some manufacturers of that keyboard have introduced a flaw. But I can understand why Lenovo made the changes; a lot of people look at the weight of a laptop when deciding on there purchase. Also remember that Lenovo is being assaulted by HP (in a business sense), who are able to offer cheaper business laptop, albeit they are a heap of rubbish. Lenovo is trying to find a balance here and I hope that they do. Since the last thing we need is HP produced rubbish taking over.
Fortunately the keyboards are able to be interchanged (thanks for clarifying this andyP). I think the mods here have offered solutions to the problem and have done an excellent job trying to help people. My advice as I have stated previously is to just switch over the keyboard yourself or do what I did and get it pre-done by a Lenovo authorised reseller. Yes Lenovo should really fix it for you, but what is the hassle of getting this done worth to you.
Lindz, just order the part and install it yourself, that way you have your laptop in Alaska and no longer need to worry.
Sorry if this is offtopic but I really wanted to put in some positives for the T400/T500 series. Now im just waiting for mine to get delivered on Mon/Tues. ![]()

Thank you Andy for that clarification of the difference between "incompatibility" and "will not fit the T40* / T50* because their documentation has other part numbers / information".
Nothing personal against Mark. In fact his last post was on 11-5 (well before this weekend) in which he said they had some understanding of the problem now but offered no information on what it was or what to do about it. So at this point we are left with sticky notes stuffed under the keyboard or purchasing an old model at our expense or sending our computer in with no explanation of what they are going to do with it. Not harshing on anyone in particular, just wanted a real understanding and a solution. Sure, new products will have problems and most anyone will forgive that. What matters in the real world of users is getting us an explanation and a solution in a timely matter. Things like Mr. Hill's stating that there is no problem with the keyboards is not helpful.
I feel I may have one now, albeit at my own expense. I will call IBM parts on Monday and order a keyboard for either the T60 or T61, whatever they have in stock. I am not into the subtleties of the different suppliers, I just want something that works. (I took typing in tenth grade but all I learned was every hair on the back of Jennifer's head.)
BTW I love everything else about the T500.
Cheers,
Lindz

I assume you meant that Mark's last post in this thread was on 11-5 since he was posting elsewhere in the forum yesterday (Saturday) afternoon which surprised me considering the beautiful fall weather we had yesterday and today in the (western) Carolinas. (I assume the front that came through Friday night was moving eastward where he's located, so that he had Carolina blue skies the rest of the weekend.)
Mark will post more information about this subject when there's more information ready for release. I expect if he told us everything he knows without the required sign-offs it would be a CLM for him. Have a little patience.
I do not work for Lenovo.
If you need help, post your question in the forum, and include your system type, model number and OS.
Do not post your serial number.
I do NOT respond to PM or e-mail requests for individual tech support.
Did someone help you today? Give 'em a Kudo! ;-)

erik wrote:ole, the information is published in the hardware maintenance manual and on the matching keyboard service TIP page.
alps keyboards are somewhat "clicky" but solid, chicony are clicky but not quite as harsh, and NMB are softer and more quiet. i prefer NMB in most cases as they feel the closest to my favorite keyboards of former 701c and 600 models. your preference may vary.
Hi Erik & All,
An update, I just spoke with a supplier of T6x keyboards. He said he knew a lot about the keyboards and claimed that the keyboard service part numbers are often changed/updated and do not correspond to what is stated in the hardware maintenance manual and keyboard service TIP page. To "prove" what he was saying, he went and picked up 3 keyboards from their stock of T6x keyboards and randomly gave me 3 numbers which did not correspond to either the T60 nor T61 keyboard from any manufacturer. Now how about that, back to square one?
Btw, I was just informed my custom T500 has arrived at the office. ![]()
Waitaminute, the sales page for this danish supplier actually says they sell TP T6x / Z6x / R6x series, but they are all classified under the same keyboard, that could explain why the keyboard service part numbers are different, I didnt have the Z6x and R6x number for cross checking when he gave me the numbers. If my assumption is correct, then I should be looking elsewhere to get the T60 or T61 NMB keyboard. Where to next...?

ole - T6x/R6x/Z6x keyboards are interchangeable.
these part number lists might be of more assistance:

most of those are redundant but do show a few part number changes across the various pages. the FRUs starting with 39T are more difficult to locate here in the US but you might have more luck finding them in sweden or denmark.
as long as the keyboard is designed for a T6x/R6x/Z6x (regardless of display size) then it will fit your T500.

Yes, but how will I ever be able to ascertain which is an NMB keyboard? Are you saying that all the keyboards are completely identical (by each manufacturer) regardless of it being a T6x/R6x/Z6x model?

take another look at the links i've provided. FRU numbers are categorized by language and manufacturer. NMB keyboards are in the third column. write down all the NMB part numbers you can find for the danish layout so you have numbers for reference.
the keyboards are indeed completely identical regardless of them being for a T6x/R6x/Z6x. the differences are in what i posted about earlier regarding the "feel" of each keyboard. in terms of physical dimensions and mounting post locations, they're all the same.
