Hi!
In December 2011, I purchased a Thinkpad W520 in the USA to replace my aging Thinkpad 61. I didn't want to take any chances that my T61 would fail and delay the writing of my PhD thesis. I only have a few months left before I must finish the dissertation.
To avoid potential problems, I purchased a Thinkpad W520 after reading great reviews online, and because of my very good experience with the Thinkpad T61, reliability and warranty repair (the T61, purchased in Singapore, was repaired once in Vancouver) over the last 4 years.
To my dismay, last week, the Thinkpad W520 would not boot. It is less than a full month old.
After reading the threads here: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Lapt
I tried removing battery and ac power, after which I pressed the power button more than 10 times (five seconds each time) and then plugging power back in. It will not start.
I assume the motherboard has failed.
This is exceedingly disappointing and now has turned into a time-consuming, potentially very costly problem that I must resolve immediately.
The main problem seems to be the fact that I am in Beijing, China.
There is a bewildering number of Lenovo repair centers here. I called several and they all shirk responsibility for repairing my machine. I am concerned because of their claim that the computer, purchased in the USA, cannot be repaired here. This is ridiculous. The W520 has a 3 year international warranty, and was clearly stated when I registered the computer on Lenovo's warranty registration site.
Does anyone have suggestions on exactly which repair center to contact or how I should proceed?
Thank you very much,
R.A.

Hi coolrat
Sad to hear that. You could try call Lenovo ThinkPad China Technical Support @ 86-10-58851110 and open a case regarding this matter.
Happy 2012!

Hi!
Thank you very much for your reply.
Quite expectedly, I've found it impossible to get through the phone message system to talk to a real person.
Using their online system does not work either. There is provision to send an email explaining the problem, but the email cannot ultimately be sent because, in order ot send the email, the machine number is necessary, and their system does not recognize computers sold outside of China.
Its really a very frustrating system. Ridiculous that its so difficult. (If I could just find a fake machine number, I could send off the email.)
I hope there will be rapid solution!
