check disk for errors

I have that hitachi 500G disk and run smartctl in ubuntu and it passed the test -

however the NTFS partition has many bad sectors and after running checkdisk for 17 hours it first checked about 40G of files and reported it corrected the errors it found ( i suppose relocating the data - thus the 14% fragmentation ) 

then it went for the free space but after 17 hours with about 20% only of the disk checked I had to quit checkdisk as I needed the laptop. Is there a quicker way /program in windows or linux to check the rest of the disk?

this repaired my HDD errors give it a try you want the Bootable Diagnostic Media Creator thats on that page http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-70578#lds2 its the PC doc that lead_org suggested I think
