A600 will not start

The computer had been on with the screen off.  My son tried to activate the computer by moving the mouse and claims he pressed the power button on the left side.  Now, there are no lights on the keyboard and the screen does not demonstrate that the Operating system has started.  How can we stimulate a clean boot up?  

 

I tried unplugging and letting the computer sit for awhile, but it hasn't changed the result.
