Do you suppose the A1 might need antivirus protection such as Lookout Security & Antivirus, Antivirus Free, etc?

Antivirus depends on your habits.

If you load a lot of applications from the internet, then yes. If you simply use the stock applications, and simply use the device as a browser, reader, and media device, then my opinion is no. Don't slow the device down with something doing AV checks.
