I think you're on to something gdeight. I found the type of app to monitor, called 'traffic counters' which keep track of what apps are using how much data. Come to find, the App Store app was running in the background grabbing a chunk of data as well as the social thingy that came preloaded. Closed both of those, and bam! Network speed is up and moving.
I first tried the turn off/on the wifi, and my bandwidth jumped up with the restart as well. So I think, at least in my case, you are correct gdeight, background apps sucking down the bandwidth. So, if I see bandwidth dropping, I know to double check some apps and close the leaches down.
Thanks a bunch!!
Apparently since the internet didn't work right, the K1 became mine. I think now that we've got this solved, maybe she'll be a little happier to take it back. Thank you again!

That's great news, glad you figured it out! Thanks for updating us. I'll have to try out the traffic counter.
One of the first things I did when I got the K1, was I tried out all the pre-installed apps and promptly removed the ones which I didn't need or didn't seem useful. That turns out to be fortuitous decision as it not only saves CPU, memory but network bandwidth!
I guess folks who use the K1 out of the box may not be as lucky... Lenovo in bundling these free apps (ie bloatware) might actually be doing their customers a disservice. I have a feeling a majority of the problems people faced are due to the bloatware.
What K1 customers could use is a guide to 'cleaning' up the K1.

It does increase speed after disconnect and reconnect the wifi, but as far as closing the applications is concerned that does not increase the speed.
Speed will go slow after a while even if i do not use the idea pad after wifi didconnect and reconnect.
