New K1 owner unhappy with GPS

Yeah its a great Tablet. GPS would have been nice though. Just that a GPS on 10inch tablet mounted on the dash of a car seems weird I might add. I can see it needed for a 5 and 7 inch tablet though.

Thanks for your post! The GPS functionality is a primary reason I bought my K1, I have to say I am very unhappy about this.

A call to Lenono's sales line (1-866-96-THINK) has confirmed the K1 does not have built in GPS. So my unit is going back...

Just got the Lenovo K1 tablet and I'm glad there's a forum where we could help each other out. Seems like a great tablet so far.

I already have a standalone GPS device but was curious to see if I could use the K1 as well.

In terms of the GPS on the K1, I just wanted to correct some misinformation that's out there.

- The Lenovo K1 uses the Broadcom BCM4751 Integrated Monolithic GPS Receiver.

- A-GPS as it's implied here is not a lesser form of GPS. If anything, it's a 'smarter' form of GPS by using additional information and network services. In any case, the K1 doesn't have a A-GPS chip.

So if you could download the maps on your device, theoretically this could function like a standalone GPS device. I'm still looking for a GPS app that has offline maps. If anyone knows of one, please let me know.

EDIT: Since it is a dedicated GPS then what could be the issue, programming ?

I took my tablet (K1_A301_12_12_111109_US) for an experiment. It did take longer to get a lock than I would have liked (anywhere from 13 seconds to over a minute), but it did get a lock. I was in my car, but with no mobile wifi, so the experiment was a test of getting a lock on the satellites without the aid of A-GPS.  Google Maps worked without an internet connection, though I did cache the maps by bringing them up on the tablet while I was at home, before the experiment. Performance-wise, it acts a lot like the GPS II I have from Garmin which was made back in the '90s. Switching apps (from GPSTest to Google Maps) also seems to force it to hunt for a lock again. It is not great, but it is functional, at least for my purposes. It doesn't get a lock nearly as fast as my HTC Evo 4G. Hopefully this is can be improved by a software update.

That's good news. This means an awesome standalone GPS app would work nicely.

Though I'm not shelling out $60 for Navigon.
