I compared the files in the K1_A301_99_99_120109 with the K1_A301_14_14_120109 update. All the files were identical except minor differences in the build.prop and the updater script.
Build.prop
ro.build.display.id=K1_A301_99_99_120109_US
vs
ro.build.display.id=K1_A301_14_14_120109_US
updater-script
The 99_99 update.zip doesn't check the build.prop before installing
This means that any improvements people might be seeing are a placebo effect. There is no reason to apply this update.

FYI, updating to 99_99 doesn't grant you root.
I downloaded Superuser from Android Market, and it installed and opened with no complaint. However, the logs were blank and there were no controls to let me do anything except change preferences.
So I downloaded Root Checker Basic, and it told me I don't have root after all.
As for breaking some apps, I was able to "redownload" the paid Docs to Go at dataviz.com, and the others updated to current working versions through the Lenovo App Store.

YouTube is dead on my machine as well. Anyone know how to find the 1414 download?
Mine too. Usual fix is to uninstall and reinstall, but I can't find out how to uninstall it. YouTube doesn't seem to be listed in "manage applications".
Fortunately, the "flash video browser" app works for youtube as well as other sites.

The YouTube issue is happening right now to all brands of tablets, not just ours.
See the other thread in this forum.

Just to clarify, I never claimed the 99_99 update gave you root, the post you quoted was in response to a post prior to mine and a prior one to that one:

If your tablet isn't rooted, check to see if 99_99 is a rooted version.
I noticed that when I installed the 99_99 OTA my already rooted K1 acted differently when titanium backup fixed the SU settings.
Just a thought

Sorry, I misunderstood your request: "If your tablet isn't rooted, check to see if 99_99 is a rooted version."
I thought you meant something like: "If your tablet wasn't rooted, check to see if it is after updating to version 99_99".
My mistake!

No worries Clear_Blue_Lou!

Is anybody getting "The application Settings (process com.android.settings) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again" and force closing when trying to check for update? But if you try several time, it works and checks for update.
K1_A301_99_99_120109 - did not fix compass, auto brightness. But youtube seem to be working for me. I do not know if it was working or not before the update.

I do not believe that this update causes the error you are having. I did have issues a few weeks ago where I was getting several force close pop-ups, I ended up having to factory reset the tablet to fix the issue.
I recommend flashing the 14_14 upate to resolve the issue. HEad over to XDA and do a search for Lenovo K1 ROOT, and use the tool timmydean created to flash your tablet (you can choose a rooted or unrooted flash).

on mine it says "start to check for new version" and if you click on that it says "downloading" for a couple of seconds and then returns to the previous screen. Nothing is getting downloaded afaik.
Is the OTA site for the K1 still active now that the K1 has been discontinued?
