how i flashed from Canadian version to US and upgraded to Android 3.2.1

It is a little strange how i got it to work.

I did a manual update by flashing these test files

K1_A301_10_10_111231_CA.xml and K1_A301_10_10_111231_CA.zip

(Both files are dated 22-Sep-2011) from http://download.lenovo.com/slates/k1/OTA_TEST

You download these files to your Download folder and rename them to update.xml and update.zip

Then you switch of your tablet. you have to then press the up volume and power button at the same time.

just before you see the Lenovo icon you have to release the power button. it takes a few tries but if it done correctly you will see the android robot and an update icon. it took me a while to get it to work.

After I flashed it for some reason it gave me a US build number in my settings. after that I did the check updates screen in settings and Lenovo pushed the latest US build of android 3.2.1 to me.you can read more about manual updating in the forums.i got updated to a US build even though i flashed a Canadian update. good luck if u decide to try.

I tried it and it worked great! Thanks monilall11! Scared me a bit at first as my screen kept blanking out after the update, but once I got it shut down and restarted it went through a few setup steps and all is ok and it runs great! I guess we have transformed our Canadian K1's into US K1's.

Is it worthwhile to do this update or would it be better to wait for the official Canadian release?

I have been running the latest US update since I accidently flashed my Canadian k1 to a US version. I find the tablet much more stable. Before my tablet would reboot when in sleep mode. Also they did some fixes for gps locking which was helpful for me. It seems that they release US updates more frequently than Canadian for some reason.

Re: how i flashed from Canadian version to US and upgraded to Android 3.2.1

would you Flash this with AC adapter connected or off Battery?  I have tried it few times and do not see the updating screen.

Procedure: with no AC connected

i downloded both files on my computer, then I connected my computer to K1 via provided USB and transfered both files under "Download" folder. then using "File Mgmt" to go to download folder and renamed the 2 files update.xml and update, zip

power down the K1(full shut down)

hold on to up volume and power bottom at the same time until I see the screen led up then released the power bottom right before Lenovo icon appears, I have tried this few times but still no sign of updates!

What am I doing wrong?

My current Kernal is 2.6.36.3 Android 3.1 with k1_A301_02_02_02_110930_ca

When I flashed mine my tablet was fully charged and not plugged into the wall. I had to try the volume pressing for a while before it took my update. I tried for about 20mins and then it magically worked.

Worked very well.  I got mine to go the first time.  I thought I had missed it, but then I checked and the version had changed.  The 3.2.1 update is being applied as I type this.  Thanks for the info and directions.  I'm loving this tablet.

Re: how i flashed from Canadian version to US and upgraded to Android 3.2.1

I finally gave up on waiting for the 3.2.1 update, seems like Lenovo has forgotten about Canada. Here is a slightly modified process for other Canadian users that want to update:

Have the K1 fully charged and have a good wireless connection.

From your PC, download K1_A301_10_10_111231_CA.xml and K1_A301_10_10_111231_CA.zip to a directory on the PC,

(Both files are dated 22-Sep-2011) from http://download.lenovo.com/slates/k1/OTA_TEST

Rename these files update.xml and update zip on the PC

Plug in your K1 to your PC with the data cable and browse to the 'Download' folder on the K1 ( not 'Downloads' ). Transfer the two renamed update files on your PC to the Download directory on the K1.

Disconnect the USB data cable and completely power down the K1 (long press on the power button).

At this point I remembered I wanted to register Documents to Go before I did an update as I had heard that apps sometimes go missing after updates. So I just powered up normally (without the up volume) thinking I would boot normally, register, then turn off and then do update.

As soon as K1 booted, it started the update right away without needing to press volume up along with power button. I can only guess it was because I had powered right off (long press on power button) before power up.

After update, my build number went from K1_A301_02_02_110930_CA to K1_A301_10_10_111231_US.

It would appear that all the A301_10_10_111231_CA.zip update does is change the Canadian rom into a US rom.

Next I checked for updates and had to go through 2 or 3 update cycles to eventually get to K1_A301_13_13_111209_US.

So far everything seems to be fine and I lost no installed apps.
