I'd like to add that my thinkpad, which sees at least as much daily use and is much older, has remained structurally sound.

OK. I found the part number 45N5914 here

But when trying to order, the system says that it is not available.

I too have the same problem. ideapad S10 (1st Generation) is under warranty but service centre says body nor hinges are covered under warranty.
what should we do.
dump the lenovo brand laptop - due to the comprehensive warranty which does not cover anything
have been writing to the customer care for more than a month now without any kind of response from them. the toll free no provided 1800 115522, but the customre care executives seem to be busy permanently. have held to the phone for more than one hour but the response remains the same 'Thank you for calling us your call is important, all our executives are attending to other customer and your call will be assisted shortly'. Lenovo seems to think that people have nothing better to do than keeping on waiting for thier busy executives to come on phone.
it is this exact way that companies spoil their goodwill in the market by providing sub-standard goods and service.

I too have a first generation S10 with a lid crack and completely sheared off left hinge. I didn't drop it, I just opened it up one day and it snapped. It was out of warranty, so I took it to a lenovo repair facility planning to pay for the repair out of pocket. Then they told me they couldn't even get parts for Ideapads, and suggested I get a Thinkpad in the future because parts are available for those. I think I won't be getting either next time.
Regardless, I want to fix this thing and I found replacement hinges on the internet. I have been searching for a tutorial on disassembly to get to the old hinge. Does anyone have a link to a video or written instructions on how to replace a hinge?? I may just start dismantling it and see what happens, but I'd prefer to work from instructions.

It seems these cracks are quite common and due to a design defect rather then misuse. Its a shame Lenovo does seem to monitor its own forum pages as they would learn a lot from its users.
I have an s10e netbook which I have discovered has a crack on the external lid near the left hinge.
Lenovo - do you take an responsibility for your design mistakes and support you customers in resolving these misakes?

@ rowdy1961 Its a shame Lenovo doesn't seem to monitor its own forum pages
first this is a peer to peer support forum (not an offical Lenovo support channel) that Lenovo pays for so that we the folks that buy their products can come and help each other.
if you look around the forum you will see that Lenovo employee's volunteer here and try to help when they can
