Re: My S10 won't boot up

KalvinKlein... your comments are highly respected very welcome!

"Independent.. over a year.. 6-7 times must do the trick.. and independent over night.. next day.. after hard using battery or sleep or hybernation or shutdown.

Doesn't have to do with systems & status at all.. used more at plugged in (for community testbase.. as on battery"

I'm not looking for a solution for this occasional problem.

But I am interested. And I want to be sure about what you said.

"Independent... over a year ."

Problem seems to occur with many operating systems & 3 different hard drives for over a year now.

"6-7 times must do the trick"

Problem happens every  6 or 7 times you stop using your netbook.

"and..over night ..next day ... after hard using battery or sleep or hybernation or shutdown."

Same as me..  That is why I suspected a Lenovo power management glitch.

But now, with your added experience, we know the problem is not OS dependent.

.. "used more at plugged in for community testbase ... as on battery"

don't know about this comment.

Re: My S10 won't boot up

An update to my last post, the BIOS update my husband did is not a fix.  :smileysad:  It must be a hardware glitch.  If it happens again I think I will be contacting Lenovo.  I could have spent quite a bit less on a different machine and not had this problem.

Just got pointed to this thread, so I add my experience here as well.

My new S10e fails to boot after about one hour beeing switched off.

The hard reset procedure described in this thread, gets it back to live

but it is an awkward task and you need a power outlet to perform the reset.

Just removing the battery does not help.

It seems to me that something on  the mainboard drains a capacitor or battery even if the netbook is switched off.

Either a BIOS or mainboard problem and clearly a warranty issue.

I will send mine back to be repaired/replaced by Lenovo.

Re: My S10 won't boot up

I haven't had this issue with my S10e, but I noticed on one of the past BIOS updates a fix was included to fix leaking current at boot up. Perhaps that is playing a role in the issues described here?

Re: My S10 won't boot up

Hi Kalvin, U seem to know a lot about these idea pads, hope u can help me qith what's happening to mine...

About 3 days ago I turned on my Idea Pad S10e (Win XP) and i got a message saying that windows couldn't load the profile previously stored due to insuficient security rights and something else I couldn't write down before the 25 sec. it takes to go into another message saying that Windows cannot execute the loal profile, and that it will load a temporary profile in which none of the changes i make will be stored in my pc.

After this, the pc goes starts up without any of my settings, without any of my documents or info, but with the programs that i had before! So, no docs, no photos, no music... I can use the internet, but nothing that I download is saved, unless i save it into my usb memory.

I had a friend helping me find my docs, they're in the C disk, in documents and settings, in my name of user, but they don't appear in "my documents" where they were before... plus i can´t save anything in my hard disk because when i turn it off and then on again they're not there!

I'm very worried, my friend recommended to save all my stuff in another pc or a dvd (this pc doens't have any dvd drive... so will have to find somelse to save it), format the hard disk and reintall the OS, but I'd like to know if there's another way to go about this problem... I'm travelling and I don't have easy access to technology... and I'd also like to know if this has heppened to anyone before... I don't see why this is happening, I don't think I've done "anything" to actually cause this...

I'd really appreciate your help with this... if you or anyone can help me you'd be real life savers!!

Thanks,

Ana.

Re: My S10 won't boot up

Ana,

I have seen this before and this isn't something that happens to just IdeaPads, it can happen to any Windows XP computer. That fact it happened on your IdeaPad is just unlucky.

What happened (for whatever reason) is your Windows user account became corrupt and Windows was unable to load that profile. It then either loaded a Guest account or some other account stored on the computer.

This could happen for a number of reasons including a failing hard disk, but 8 times out of 10 it's caused by some type of virus/malware infection that corrupts parts of the disk. None of your data is probably lost. Windows stores user account information (including files in the "My Docs, My Pics, etc") in the following directory, so if you navigate here via "My Computer" you can move your data to other parts of the drive or someplace else, the location is: C:/Documents & Settings/<your old user account name>/

Once you get there, look through the folders for your files and move them.

--

After the files are safe, go ahead and create a new user account via "Control Panel/Users". Once you've created another account, restart and boot into the account you created.

At this point, I would scan the computer for any infections (I prefer Avira Anti-Virus and Malwarebytes) -which are both free, and clean them up.

After the computer is cleaned, move your files back to the user account you just created and delete the old one.

You may also want to try going to "Start" -> "Run" and typing "scf /scannow" (without quotes) to restore any damaged Windows XP files.

What you're essentially doing is deleting the corrupt account, creating a new one, moving your data from the old account to the new one and checking for any infections. After your data is safe, you could just skip what I said and not bother to try and clean up Windows and just restore it to factory settings if you want but I find too many people suggesting "restoring" over trying to diagnose/fix the actual problem but it's up to you.

You can also try running "chkdsk /f" (no quotes) in the Command Prompt and following the directions.

Good luck
