Re: [S10/S10e Fan Problems Collecting Info for Lenovo] S10 fan runs too fast, too often, too loud

Scott,

My concern however is looking over this thread...how many lemons are there?   Lots...

Mano,

You didn't offend me in any way.  Everybody is entitled to their own opinion.  I hope that in the end, there is a solution that will make everybody's S10 and S10e nearly silent.

It's a shame it doesn't :smileywink:

Re: [S10/S10e Fan Problems Collecting Info for Lenovo] S10 fan runs too fast, too often, too loud

All,

I believe the production version of BIOS for S10 will be available on the web by early next week.   I shared the most recent beta so that we could get some additional feedback, and as I thought it would provide an immediate benefit for most, and since we had missed the 17th and 24th, and I wanted to share some progress rather than just another date.

As such, I will fulfill the requests received to this point, and will then defer to the pending production version.  Please hold further requests for the beta version at this time.

I agree the responses in the thread so far have been mixed - I think some members recognize the progress that has been made in listening to the concerns about the cycling fan.   We also have some outspoken critics here.

Some observations...

In trying to respond to forum conversations,  it takes some time to define the true nature of the issue because various people see it differently.   While I agree this has taken some time, I'm not sure it's fair to start the clock by the first post.  I think it took some weeks to define the consensus concern as frequently cycling and too soon start of the fan.

There is focus on the loudness of the fan, but having measured several machines with a DB meter, I find that to be subjective and heavily influenced by ambient noise and the operation of the fan - how quickly it ramps from off to maximum speed.  Radical changes in speed contribute heavily to the perception, so I think the focus on expanding the range and reducing the cycling has been the proper focus from engineering.

There may be individual fans which are out of spec and inherently loud due to a mechanical issue - a bad bearing, or interference with the fan housing.  These are best handled through service - a BIOS update may not resolve those individuals while it does resolve for others.

Temperature thresholds - many have noted and quoted the atom data sheet, but I think we need to consider the overall temperature and effects on other components in the system, and the long term affect on reliability.   It's an easy point to argue individually that temp could be raised 10 degrees, but at want cost to long term reliability?  Would those making this arguement accept the consequences of sooner failures outside of warranty?

Individuals have the freedom to make their own decisions based on how much risk they want to assume - soldering in diodes to decrease fan RPM, or eliminating the fan altogether.   As such, individual opinions may vary a bit in where they would establish operational boudaries.   I have to trust that our engineers are making decisions with the longevity of the system in mind.

Best regards,

Mark

Re: [S10/S10e Fan Problems Collecting Info for Lenovo] S10 fan runs too fast, too often, too loud

Hi Mark,

thanks for rhe heads up on the development. But please, could you put the minds of us S10e users at rest and give any anctual affirmation that work on that bios will follow close behind. The recent weeks have given us various driver updates for the S10 an additional Bios in feburary and the beta bios for the S10 but only a new version of wlan drivers for the S10e and you continously talk about the S10 Bios and stress the point that both models differ to such a degree that the S10 Bios can not be applied to the S10e without causing other difficulties.

I really don't  want to get on anybodys nerves but I am a strong believer in actual facts and as I have stated before I am a recently burned child with my former notebook, that had a similar problem in that case the bios for the machine I bought was release 6 month after the bios that fixed the problem for the more expansive model, if I remember correctly by than and it took me and others nearly a year to get the manufacturer to admit that in addition to this the graphics board was falty, too, so this really brings back bad memories of stress and long hours stating the same facts over and over to customer service and it becomes an issue for me if I should return the machine or not.

Don't get me wrong  I really appreciate your efforts and the work you put into this and the support you are giving us users, but I am afraid I need to see some real light at the end of the tunnel before I stop worrying if it was a mistake to go with the S10e and put my trust in the lenovo/IBM image.

Still hopefull yours

While people are waiting for the bios fix to S10 and S10e........

There is a very well known FREE utility called SpeedFan. IF it detects your fan control system, then it will allow you to change a whole host of parameters.

But...be careful!!!

You can download it from this link for free http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php

Good luck all.

I think it'd be good if there was a way for the user to manually set the fan threshold and rpm as an advanced option in the Energy Management Software.

Re: [S10/S10e Fan Problems Collecting Info for Lenovo] S10 fan runs too fast, too often, too loud

[ Edited ]

I am running the beta bios in my S10, it has fixed some of the fan cycling.

My bigger question is just how warm should the S10 run?

I have two of them here, using Everest the lowest I have seen the actual CPU was 53 celcius - how are other people seeing lower temperatures? This is with the S10 on a smooth table, ambient temp 21 celcius. The CPU is at 0 load, only task manager and everest running. I am running the CPU at the lowest speed even. I know it sure runs hot compared to my older laptops or even the Dell Mini 9 I tried. I'd think mine was defective but I do have two of them and they both are within 2 degrees.
