Guys I should not have to say this but please don’t do this if you have no idea what you’re doing. If you do end up breaking something please don’t post about because I will just laugh at you.

This was all done by items I found around the house and took about an hour to do. I bought nothing, but if u had to buy items it would cost about $5.

S10 weight after heatsink modification = 2 Ib 13 oz

I did not measure it with the fan, I am sure you can find it on the net. 

1st, get thin copper plates. I got them from old dell heatsink.

2nd, get aluminum plates, I got some from knife holders.

3rd, a small heatsink with fins, I got it from old heatsink/chipset heatsink.

4th, get thermal pads, had some laying around.

The heatsink modification involved no case modification, and everything fits in place. I am pretty sure this will void your warranty but you can always reverse all the modifications you have done (to make it look like you did nothing o0). So "When” (yea?) lenovo fixes the fan issue you can go back to the original design. Having no fan does help the battery life. Makes up for the wireless N card killing my battery.       

Now ill show you the rest via pictures.

Pictures are taken with a Canon EOS 50D, so resolution would not be the issue. It just really pisses me off when people take pictures with webcams (seriously?), cellphones (ughhh) or excuses for a camera. The pictures are uploaded in full quality. Each picture is 6megs. Also I will upload low rez pictures.

Also I am including the old design with the new design. The new design is far better at removing heat and distributing it away from the cpu and Northbridge, however both work. The copper plates are attached to the heatpipe.

Did not really see anything you can use on that website except the thermal pads. Most heatsinks there are either too expensive or too tall to fit in you case. I would recommend you search for chipset heatsinks.

Kaizer1911, thanks for the designs. It is popular - rapidshare download limit is already exceeded.

 

This would be the most  difficult part - finding the right components. If someone doing the fanless mod finds an online store and buys parts from there, SKUs will be greatly appreciated.

Shame on Lenovo for making us go through this....

You might look closer as the site has hundreds of various sizes in heat sinks as well as thousands of items for cooling.

Would be nice if someone posted a step-by-step explanation how to replace a heat sink with a much better one, including pics etc. for those among us who are not too expert in hardware stuff. Also recommendations as to what elements in what sizes and what quality are required to ensure a real difference. A few dollars (or euros in my case) more or less is not the main isssue I think. I would love to, but I tried that with the BIOS for my Toshiba laptop, and I have to admit it was beyond me. If you have the knowledge - why don't you just make a couple of BIOSes based on what people here wants and post them somewhere? I'm sure it would be greatly appreciated!
