Creating Rapiddrive Y570

I have an Y570 i5-2430 with a slow 500gb 5400rpm harddrive. I look to improve my harddrive performance, so i thought about changing it to SSD, but that is too expensive for similar capacity and changing to a 7200rpm drive will not give any significant boost i think.

So i thought about adding mSata SSD to create a rapiddrive, but after searching forums and internet I found no information about how i can do it myself.

The question is:

a) will any manufacturer's mSata SSD from 32gb to 64gb fit?

b) will i need to reinstall windows? if yes, is it in any special way?

c) will my laptop support rapiddrive as it was from factory without ssd?

Any help is appreciated :smileywink:)

Re: Creating Rapiddrive Y570

I've bought and installed 128 gb crucial m4 msata ssd into my y570 recently, and it's working like charm. About rapiddrive - I didn't install it, I simply cloned my C partition to ssd (it contains windows installation and program files, while games & media files are still stored on hdd).I don't think that rapiddrive is really needed because even 64 gb is usually enough to store your OS & programs (excluding games, of course), so boot time & responsiveness of OS would be great, and you don't usually need to store media or games on SSD, so IMO you can do without rapiddrive.
Also, I recommend you to clone windows by creating restoration image using windows restoration tool.

Sfairat, could you please post a picture of where you installed the SSD?

Re: Creating Rapiddrive Y570

I can't take a photo of it now, will post it in a few hours.

However, I can show you it's location on an image taken from hw maintenance guide.Screen Shot 2012-07-30 at 18.29.27.png

So, as you can see, it's under mini PCI express slot (slot with wifi adapter) and to the left of the hard drive; it looks like pci express slot (though, in general, msata is not compatible with mpcie).

Re: Creating Rapiddrive Y570

Ah thanks man, you cleared a lot ! I knew there were small SSDs that could fit in there alongside with the normal HDD. If I have the resources I will buy a 64 or 128 GB as soon as possible.
Anyway, how much was your 128 GB?
