FAQ - Small disk "C" and large disk "D"

sumithra576, purpose of NOVO on Y410 is just as on others - starting restore system.

You can increase space free space on C drive using methods described in first post of this theme. You can increase size of C itself by software PartedMagic, Gparted, Paragon partition Manager, Acronis Disk Director Suite.

Thanks for your reply. Yesterday i have done that and restored my C Drive, After i started installing programs again C Drive is decreasing from 30 GB to 5 GB. I will see your previous post again and will try as mentioned.

Hi. The last week or so I had noticed my C drive filling up at an alarming rate. Each time I turned on my computer, there would be less available space on the drive. Once in a while, if I restarted, it would free up a few MBs, but the general trend was that the drive was becoming more full. Finally, last night, I used Partition Manager to allocate more space to C drive from the D drive. (I had forgotten that repartitioning would render the Novo button useless - is there any way to get back its functionality? Or to get a disk with Windows on it?) I added 10 more gigs to C drive. I then defragged with PerfectDisk, uninstalled a couple programs I didn't need, and used the Windows Disk Cleanup utility. I had 9.75 gigs available on C drive after all this. I restarted this morning, and now I only have 8.09 gb free. It's great to have more space available on C drive, but the contents of C drive do not seem to be large enough to be taking up 30 gb of space, and the fact that the drive is constantly growing in size for no apparent reason is definitely concerning me. I tried the options listed in the first post (except the hibernation one, since I use the hibernate feature), but none of them really made a difference.

Does anyone have any idea as to what might be causing the problem? I do not think I have a virus - I am running Sophos and SpySweeper and did a sweep of both this morning.

As I already mentioned, you need to turn off shadow volume copy service - disable Windows built-in recovery system.

Questions to skripatch:

I purchased Y530 with larger C and smaller D. I want to change the size ot those partitions. So:

1. I made disc recovery with original settings.

2. Now I want change partitions.

3. When I will do it, restoring from partition recovery will be disabled but it will be able to restore the system from disc recovery which I was made in step one. Am I right?

4. Preparing the next disc recovery just after repartitioning and using that disc in the future provides me the sizes of both partitions which existed while creating disc recovery. Am I right? What about the data on partition C and D in such situation ?

But using previous disc recovery created in step one, will bring me back to the original size of partitions and will erase all data from C and D ?

piohal - To change partition sizes, you must first repartition and then create the backup disks. The original recovery disk will not work as the partitions have been changed. You can use both recovery disks only if you know exactly how much space was allocated to drive "C" when the backup was made.

Firstly, none of these backups or restores touch disk D at all - they all are around disk C.

Secondly, every backup made is able to restore only to that size of partition it was created of (or bigger): if you made backup of 100-Gb disk C, you will be able to restore this backup only to 100 or more GB disk C.

 Thirdly, any restoring from backup image erases all info on disk C and doesn't touch a byte from disk D.

3. You will not be able to restore to your made disk after repartition until you revert changes.

4. making your new recovery disk after repartitioning will allow you to restore from this disk to C partition of same size or bigger in future.

However, if I remove recovery partition in the future (after current resizing of existing partitions) by adding free space to D partition (without changing C, there will not be a problem using disc recovery created after resizing but before removing recovery partition. Am I right ?

Piohal, you've got the point absolutely right - the size DOES matter, but only C - size
