Gmail as a default client

I have Vista. And when I see an email as "contact us" or plainly written and hyperlinked, MS wants to use Outlook as a default. I dont have outlook, and use IE.

Is there a way (perferably in IE, but any browser will do) to make Gmail the default client, so I can just click the hyperlink and be taken to gmail, rather than copy and paste it into the address bar?

I only use Gmail for an email client now. I set up Windows Mail (the default Vista mail app if you don't have MS Office installed) to use Gmail. It's actually pretty easy. Whenever I click on a link to send an email, Windows Mail opens up and uses Gmail. Google has a step-by-step to set up Windows Mail here.
