Ideapad V460 - Screen going black while on. Only a few days old

[ Edited ]

Hi there.

I recently bought this notebook (on Dec. 24, 2010) and it's been fine though I've been having this bizarre issue with the screen going black while the computer is on and I am unable to get out of it unless I force; shut down, the computer (holding down the power button) and then turning it back on.

The first occurance was when I was trying to get a system rating score (Start > Computer (Right Click) > Properties > System : Rating)  The process seems as if it is going fine but then a little over half way in (or about half way) the screen goes black and doesn't return from that.  At first I thought it was just some power setting (new computer) so I tried pressing keys, trying to switch to the built in monitor (Fn + F3), moving the mouse, and nothing was working, so I forced it to shut down and turned it back on and it works.

The second occurance was with just leaving it idle for maybe 30 minutes, which again, I thought was just a power setting and again I could not get out of it.

I did another forced shut down and when it turned on again everything was working.  From here I investigated the power settings more thoroughly.  I made sure that it wouldn't put the computer to sleep (even though the computer stays on during the problem), and I made sure in the advanced power settings that the hard disk were to 'never' be turned off if idling.

After this I decided to try to test to get a system rating again and of course, same problem.

I don't know what this is!! I've only had the computer for a few days and this problem is driving me crazy.  I'm not sure if it's a setting that I'm unfamiliar with or if it's a hardware issue.

I checked all the drivers and everything is up to date.

The computer is the i5 version w/ Windows 7 Home.   It's pretty much straight out of the box

Please let me know if you know of a solution. Thank you!
