Hello,
I am trying to install 8 Gb of RAM in to my Y650.
Currently it has 3 Gb. 1Gb + 2Gb:
Both of currently installed RAM boards conform to this: PC3-8500 DDR3-1066 204pin SDRAM SODIMM
1Gb - Micron Technology 8JSF12864HZ-1G1F1
2 Gb - Micron Technology 16JSF25664HZ-1G1F1
New RAM boards are 4Gb each and conform to this: PC3-10660 DDR3-1333 204pin SDRAM SODIMM
both are 4Gb - Silicon Power Computer & Communications DBST4GN
System info:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo P8700 (Socket P (478))
Chipset: Intel PM45
Southbridge: Intel 82801IM (ICH9-M)
BIOS version: 15CN35WW (V2.08)
EC version: 15EC39WW (V2.06) (not sure what it is but it is shown in BIOS setup screen)
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce G 105M (revision A2) on PCI Express
Machine has two slots for memory boards. Let them be Slot A and Slot B. (Slot A is leftmost one and Slot B is rightmost one if you look on computer as during usual work. Memory slots are placed right under keyboard so in order to replace memory there is no need to access the bottom of machine.)
When I install both 4 Gb boards then machine does not start. I can see that something happening (power led is highlighted at least) but boot screen with Lenovo logo is not appearing, screen is black.
I tried next combinations with old and new memory boards:
1. single 4 GB board.
-Slot A recognizes each of memory boards.Computer is working normally with each of them.
-Slot B does not recognize any of them.
2. Slot A - 4Gb. Slot B - 4Gb.
Not working. Switched boards so one board that was in Slot A moved to Slot B. Not working.
2. 2 GB board.
Can be placed in either Slot A or Slot B. System starts up normally
3. Slot A - 1Gb. Slot B - 2Gb.
Native configuration. All is working.
4. Slot A - 2 Gb. Slot B - 1 Gb.
All is working.
5. Slot A - 4Gb. Slot B - 2 Gb.
All is working. Installed in Slot A each of 4Gb boards. And all is working.
6. Slot A - 4 Gb. Slot B 1 Gb.
All is working. Installed in Slot A each of 4Gb boards. And all is working.
7. Slot A - 2Gb. Slot B - 4Gb.
Not working. Tested with both 4Gb boards in Slot B.
8. Slot A 1 Gb. Slot B - 4 Gb.
Not working. Tested with both 4Gb boards in Slot B.
I have no access to any other RAM boards of any other manufactirer/characteristycs. So I cannot test any other combinations. I will not have such access in near future but need 8Gb RAM installed.
Maybe somebody looking at this data could tell:
- is there any way to use these two 4Gb boards together in this computer? I have no access to hardware now and will not have for a while so two new 4Gb slots is all I have.
- is it at all possible to use 8Gb of RAM in this computer? I have read some info on lenovo.com and it seems 8Gb is supported. But not all that is written in our world is true.
Maybe some more info should be added in order to give an answer?
