Re: Lenovo Y550 problem with WiFi and 8GB of Ram

I spoke with Kingston tech support and they are going to replace my new RAM with Kingston ktL-tp1066/4g. He said that these modules are system specific for Lenovo. The ones that I purchased may not be compatable with Lenovo.

Re: Lenovo Y550 problem with WiFi and 8GB of Ram

[ Edited ]

good, so now we will have a clear situation if it's RAM chip issue or KIWB1 MB... maybe after that, we will have a proof for lenovo support team to do something... or the KTL chips will work fine, we will see. mmaaddict78 reply after testing the new "KTL" RAM, and thanks in advance

I wrote to the guy who give me the screenshot from cpu-z of his y550 with GM45 (the same I wrote in prevous posts) and he test his 8gb kingston with memtest4.0 and he have 0 errors :smileywink: he says he have no problems, no blue screens etc everything is ok... For now I can tell that he have: Intel C2D T6600(FSB 800), KIWB1, 8GB RAM(800mhz), 320GB, GeForce G210M. I write some more information about the RAM chip soon (if it's dedicated for lenovo chip or sth else)

Re: Lenovo Y550 problem with WiFi and 8GB of Ram

I'm actually going to just RMA it to Newegg.com since it's not faulty memory and then get the RAM suggested by Kingston tech support. I'll be sure to let you all know how it turns out.

By the way, I mentioned upgrading to a Q9100 processor...well I tried it and it doesn't work. The Power supply does not put out enough juice to power the quad core processor even thought they are the same socket and everything. I'll be exchanging that processor for a new dual core, maybe a p9700.

Re: Lenovo Y550 problem with WiFi and 8GB of Ram

so maybe there is some problem with power supply, XBrav mentioned about it between 1333 and 1066 chips, maybe some components (CPU, RAM) with more power consumption makes system unstable (q9100 have 4 cores with 1.050V-1.175V each core...and yes, it should be compatible with GM45... your previous cpu - P7450 have 2 cores with 1.050V-1.150V so the q9100 power consumption is twice higher

Re: Lenovo Y550 problem with WiFi and 8GB of Ram

Well Kingston tech support guaranteed that the 8 gigs of RAM they recommended will work. It's pc3-8500 1066, so it's basically the same as the stock ram just 4 gigs more. It will probably take more than a week to get it because I'm not ordering the new RAM untill I get my refund from newegg(had issues ordering before my refund before but not with newegg). I'll keep you guys posted.

Re: Lenovo Y550 problem with WiFi and 8GB of Ram

For people who are having wifi issues, does the adapter itself disappear, or does the signal strength just go to zero?

Re: Lenovo Y550 problem with WiFi and 8GB of Ram

I'm going to exchange the Q9100 for a E8435. The 8435 was made for Apple but it is based on the T9900 it should work. Will keep you all posted.

Re: Lenovo Y550 problem with WiFi and 8GB of Ram

I talk to the guy (who have 8gb with no issues) and he says that he didn't update any drivers since he buy laptop, he have a wifi driver: 13.0.0.107, but he don't know what is the chipset driver becouse even the Intel update utulity don't show what is the number of driver (he says it's probably a normal windows driver). So you can try older drivers too.

Re: Lenovo Y550 problem with WiFi and 8GB of Ram

Hi mmaaddict78 and others,
how about the E8435. I have the same mobo (KIWB1), and I was considerin to upgrade my cpu to Q9100, but according to your post It won't work. Now I am about to buy E8435.
How about the E8435, did it work for you? I asking because the procesor has TDP 45W, which is equal to the TDP of Q9100 or QX9300. Did anybody tested other top CPU for socket P with the laptop.

Re: Lenovo Y550 problem with WiFi and 8GB of Ram

Hi again, I have another guy with 8gb and WiFi works: LINK

he have 2x 4GB Kingstone KVR1333D3S9/4G PC3-10600 DDR3 SDRAM SO-DIMM... so it's 1333 again and everything works fine, maybe 1333 is somehow better than 1066 chips ;P I thik I'll buy 1333 in the future for my y550 :smileywink:

@kudlatymarcin on this SITE in the comments someone write that his dell 1737 (it's with chipset GM/PM45) recognized this processor as X9100, as you see the other guy talk about his acer aspire 8930g (it's PM45 chipset too)... so probably the E8435 should work in y550 becouse it's the same chipset, but I can't guarantee in 100%... :smileywink:
