USB Power stays on

[ Edited ]

Hi,

I recently bought a Zalman ZM-NC2000 to keep my laptop cool (Y560). I'm quite happy with the device but I'm disapointed that I have to manually unplug it or turn the power off for the fans to stop working.
Since it's USB powered, I'm hoping that the fans/cooling can automatically stop when the computer enters sleep mode.

I have the following settings:

Device Manager (Generic USB Root)
- Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power (checked)
Power Options
- USB selective suspend (Enabled)

After much reading about USB, it's my understanding that it's up the BIOS / manufacturer to decide if power is cut to a given USB port when going to sleep.

I understand that is most cases, you still need power to go to the USB to "wake from sleep" using a USB mouse for example.

Ways to solve my problem:
- New BIOS setting
USB Power On (sleep):  Both (default), USB1, USB2
- Other USB product
Don't think it exists, but a USB hub that cuts power to devices connected to it when OS enter sleep mode.

Any known hacks so that before entering sleep, I can cut power to a USB port?
Similarly, on resume, restore power to a given USB port?

In summary, I have a USB powered "cooling pad with fans" with a switch that I can turn on & off.
When I put the computer to sleep, the USB port continues to provide power to the "cooling pad fans".
Even worse, if I unplug the AC adapter while the computer is in sleep mode, the "cooling pad fans" continue to operate
and drain the battery.

Other people with ~ the same issue:
In the last case, a PCI to USB expansion card works for a desktop but not for a laptop.

Ultimately, is this a problem with the Zalman ZM-NC2000 which should allow itself to turn off when entering sleep mode?
Should I blame the Y560 for not having USB port with no power during sleep? Any lenovo laptops with that feature?
Thanks!

After checking on thinkpad and edge laptops:

They support in the BIOS:

- "Enable Always On USB"

That's what I need to disable.

Why isn't this available in the ideapad notebooks?

So I now have 2 BIOS feature requests for lenovo:

- "Fn and Ctrl key swap"

- "Enable Always On USB"

Why there's such a difference between ideapad products and thinkpad is beyond me.

I use the Y560 (at least trying) as my primary business laptop.

- "enable always pn usb"

press f2 to load bios > configuration > legacy usb support > disabled.

Re: USB Power stays on

Thanks for the reply

- "enable always pn usb"

press f2 to load bios > configuration > legacy usb support > disabled.

I just checked (Ideapad Y560), unfortunately I don't see that option in the BIOS (v71 - the latest)

From what I remember in the "Configuration" screen there was only ~ 3 options:

...

SATA mode

Intel Virtualisation

Re: USB Power stays on

Hi, I have the exact same problem. I disabled legacy usb support but it doesn't fix the problem. The usb power is still running even when the system if off. Is there any way to only keep power to certain usb ports? I only need power to one because my mouse is hooked to it and i use it to wake up the computer. Thanks.
