- are they so? Or are they like our good ole thinkpads? Should I take special care of these systems?

Well put. We have also found that there are some intrinsic strengths in being thin. For example, it's kind of hard to crack a palmrest when there's less clearance between it and the internal components just below it. Last example, not every ThinkPad that passes MilSpec has had a rollcage in it. Just saying.

Our Lenovo Ultrabooks follow the same reliable design as our IdeaPad product line.
The U310 and U410 are equipped with a sturdy metal (aluminium) cover to protect the systems. The ultrabooks are designed to keep the height of the U310 to under 18 mm and for the U410, under 21 mm to meet the demands for machines that are both light and thin for easy portability,
Like all things, customers are advised to not abuse their systems, such as putting them in undesirable conditions, including extreme temperatures and forces.
All our products come with a minimum of one year warranty, which can be extended, depending on your region of purchase, as well as preference. To see our options, please visit http://www.lenovo.com/services_warranty/US/en/leno

To expand on what RodneyLCC said:
I've seen the inside of several larger (or normal) size laptops, and there is always a lot of dead space, which could lead to fragility. But when you are compacting everything down to 18MM thin, there is very little dead space inside there, which actually could strengthen it.
