Y450 DC jack replacement problems

Hello and thanks for any help you can give me. I have an Ideapad Y450. I've been having power issues for a while. The computer stopped recognizing the power cord being plugged in. It would come off and on depending on how the cable was positioned. I realized that the DC jack was probably busted. So I took my laptop apart to find that the black wire had fully separated from the back of the jack. I ordered a replacement, and it is identical in every way. I've installed it and reassembeled my laptop, but the power still isn't recognized at all and the battery doesn't charge when powered down. The computer works in everyway, but it only has two hours of charge left and then I'll never be able to turn it back on...... Please help me. What could be wrong? I would really like to solve this without lenovo's help. I sent this unit in to their service center, $150 and 2 weeks later, they told me it was the AC power cable. I bought a new one for 80 bucks, only to find out it was never broken and the DC jack is to blame. Thanks a lot Lenovo.

Re: Y450 DC jack replacement problems

Hi, 415.

Does not run with battery out and plugged in? Correct?

Unplug, remove battery, and hold down power button 30 seconds.
Re-install battery, plug in and see if it will run, or charge.
(This "Reset" sometimes helps.)

New jack may be faulty, when I install a new jack, I always
test before reassembly, by checking that voltage gets to motherboard.

Damaged old jack may have caused a problem on the motherboard.

Sounds like the service center really let you down.

Re: Y450 DC jack replacement problems

Thank you for the suggestion. You are correct that the system will not boot up without the battery. I tried the reset procedure with no luck. It seems clear to me that the machine is not receiving any electricity. I fear that if I go back to Lenovo for service, my total repair costs for a new mobo + all the shipping and service fees + my existing expenditure on the first "round" of service + the AC cable I didn't need, will cost more than buying a new ultrabook. FROM SAMSUNG. So I guess my new question is, how do I save my music collection? Is it possible to hook up the laptops internal hard drive to a desktop pc and transfer files? Again, thanks for your help.

Re: Y450 DC jack replacement problems

Yes, put the HD in a external enclosure to rescue files.

Can be used as a backup drive later.
