Installed WinXP Professional on Y550P. Everything works fine except that the computer hangs on shutdown / restart. It shuts down to a blank blue screen with an arrow displayed, but I can't move the arrow and Control-Alt-Delete has no effect. I have to hold down the power button to shut the computer off, and then push the power button again to restart it. I've tried some of the standard WinXP fixes with no effect. Is there something Lenovo-specific that would explain this?

no, the standard mouse pointer. Blue screen with no writing, standard mouse pointer appears but can't be moved. Just doesn't finish the shutdown - poweroff or restart.

installed applications recently?
tried safe mode for windows? ( by pressing f8 on the bios screen )
is there any option to restore to a previous state ( latest system working well )?
there may be lots of reasons but i think you are having trouble with driver or application issue.
can you check system error log for this issue? ( needed more information )
is it possible to make a clean installation? ( i think this solves your issue )

I noticed the failure to power off / restart when installing winXP before installing any of the Lenovo-specific drivers. I had installation disk for WinXP SP1, installed that and ran SP3. XP install was a clean installation (can't downgrade from Win7). Checked event viewer but not system log. I'm wondering whether not running SP2 first had anything to do with it although SP3 is supposed to have everything that SP2 has. Also wondering whether running XP in SATA compatible mode instead of AHCI has anything to do with failure to power off /restart.

didn't you install ahci drivers?
if needed you'd be promted to install sp2 first.
when did you install operation system for the last time? cause you may need a clean installation.
if you install windows updates, it may take long time to shut off.
for more infomation would be better to help you. start checking system logs ![]()

Don't know how to install AHCI drivers into XP short of slipstreaming drivers and new windows install. Other methods I've seen on the net don't work. I'm thinking of doing that. In the meantime I'll look at the system logs.

latest system logs are dated 2/14/2010 and the computer has failed to power off since that date, so whatever is causing the issue is not being recorded in the system logs.

Try installing standard USB-videodevice drivers instead of Lenovo Easy Camera drivers - usually webcam drivers from Lenovo cause this issue.
If you want a quick solution without any lurking - use hibernation and be happy.

Ok, will do.
I didn't try having the computer hibernate but that is one way to shut it off, I suppose. I don't think that will work but I'll try it.
