I just got my laptop today in the mail. It's an awesome machine, I awas very impressed. However, once I decided to play a game, the temps were super high. This cannot be normal. My idle is around 50-55C with the AC around 75F (24C) probably. When I was playing Batman Arkham Asylum, I decide to check my temps and they were in around 80 and I found out they even hit 89C. I am playing on a wood table with nothing obstructing the vent. Do I have a defective laptop or do I just need a laptop cooling pad if I ever want to do some serious computing/gaming?

Your laptop comes with a separate graphica card or an integrated one?

Discrete/separate. I have an ATI Mobility HD 5730. There is no switchable graphics, I spent thirty minutes looking. One indicator is that there will be an icon for it on the bottom left sticker. I think it was a bonus perk only some people got depending on model and time of buy, sort of like the 5400 vs 7200 RPM hard drives.

I just got off the phone with tech support and they acknowledge that 90C is abnormal, but do not seem to deem it as a problem as they did not seek to fix it beyond the suggestion of additional cooling or using less intensive software. HELLO, I bought an i7 FOR intensive software. What I would like to know is that if overheating is typical/expected of performance laptops and that cooling pads are deemed necessary for heavy computing. I am okay with that, as long as it's admitted. I do not want to just assume 89C is normal without some kind of feedback.

You should be fine as long as the temperatures remain below 100 degrees Celcius. Processors are designed to decrease their performance when they get too hot to prevent damage to components. That happens at the "Tjuncton" temperature you see on Intel's website. Here is the link.

Ok heres my temps
IDLE state, Energy star power option:
CPU i3 330m :52C
PCH: 62C (intel chipset)
IMC: 55C (Ram?)
GMCH: 35C (south bridge?)
GPU 54C ( ATI 5730)
HDD : 42C (Hitachi 7.2k)
Cooling fans : 39% ( gpu)
When playing GTA IV
CPU i3 330m :80C
PCH: 59C (intel chipset)
IMC: 74C (Ram?)
GMCH: 23C (south bridge?)
GPU 79C ( ATI 5730)
HDD : 41C (Hitachi 7.2k)
Cooling fans : 70% ( gpu)
I dont know i think temps are pretty high ?!
im wondering how come plastic did not melt yet **bleep**, 80 C , i've got 2nd degree burns on my left hand ![]()
anyways whole laptop is cold, bottom to, only part where heatpipes are is freaaaaaaky hot?
maybe thermal paste isnt good? will service cover it up?
what are yours temps guys? i reallly want to hear,
and also i think 74 C for RAM is a killer... ![]()

I used HWiNFO32 Sensor's panel.
As a comparison:
IDLE state, Energy star power option:
CPU i3 330m :45C
PCH: 59C (intel chipset)
IMC: 51C (Ram?)
GPU 50C ( ATI 5730)
HDD : 38C (Hitachi 7.2k)
Cooling fans : 30% ( gpu)
while i was writing it , temperatures changed couple of times ![]()
Btw, i have the same config as yours.
