Y560 System Crash when exiting game, sometimes during game. No BSOD

Hoping you all can help me with a problem that's been plaguing me for months. Whenever I EXIT a game, like 95% of the time my computer will completely lock up - no blue screen or error messages. I can't move the mouse or anything. I have to do a hard power-off (hold down the power button) and then turn it back on.

It seems to be getting worse - now it seems to be occurring fairly often when I play.

Computer is:

  • Lenovo y560 Ideapad
  • Windows 7 Home Premium with all the latest updates/SP1
  • Core i3 M380 (2.53ghz)
  • 4GB RAM (3.80 GB usable ? )
  • ATI Radeon 5730M
  • 500GB Hitachi HDD
  • Razer Death Adder USB Mouse
  • Logitech Dinovo Edge BT Keyboard

I've tried lots of things such as updated all my drivers to the latest versions, and I even reformatted my computer recently but the problem still persists. I ran some stress tests on the RAM, CPU and video card and all went fine. Happens with just about every 3D game including Team Fortress 2, Darksiders, Portal 2, CS: Source, Red Faction: Armageddon among others.

There is nothing special in Event Viewer either.

Re: Y560 System Crash when exiting game, sometimes during game. No BSOD

it's overheating.
my y560 does the same thing, it doesnt shut off, it just freezes.

do the aida 64 stress test(only fpu) + furmark fora about 20 min.
that is the only stresstest that heats the system to it's max
then close one of them, system will freeze if it hasnt already.

bios is not controlling the fan well enough and lenovo doesnt care.
only thing you can do is lift the laptop while playing games.

Hi  Amelia,

please have a look at this thread about overheating...

If it was an overheating issue, I don't understand why the crashes would happen most often immediately upon exiting a game, rather than, say, after an hour of playing. Unless there is something I'm missing?

I will try to clean out the system though. Thanks!
