Y560 overheating and shutting down

[ Edited ]

hi!

I've bought the Lenovo Y560 laptop ~1.5 years ago and I've been very satisfied with its performace overall, but I've recently noticed, it overheats and shuts down when playing newer games (doesnt appear in games like WoW or LoL or similar low end system req games). And we all know why we bought such a high performace machine (and it isnt to use Facebook).

I've installed Hardware Monitor and my idle temperatures on my i7 are ~60 degrees and my GPU is ~55 degrees. Seems pretty ok I guess. Under heavy load, they exceed 97 degrees and thats when the system shuts down, beacuse of thermal protection.

I've tried testing with bios 71 and bios 59, but the problems persist and I didnt really notice much of a difference, but I have read that under some bios the fan doesnt go over a certain %, but never reaches 100% speed. I've also updated GPU drivers and energy managment thingy.

Now, I have come to two solutions - I am going to clean the pc today, apply new thermal paste and blow out the dust and stuff. Hopefully that will help. The other is, but I dont really want to do it, is to cut the blue wire that is the fan control one, but then the fan would be at 100% constantly, which is just not needed (noise and stuff).

Is there anything Im missing?

Edit1: forgot to mention, that those underload temperatures are measured with my cooling station active (homemade from 2 old GPU fans).

Hi Ziga,

nothing missing, just do it step by step, clean heatsink first, may apply new thermal paste,

you can cut the blue wire later and reattach it again if not found appropriate...

and please report results,

Y560 Hardware Maintenance Manual:

clean the heatsink fins with a soft toothbrush:

I'm curious...Zehn

Edit... link fixed

Re: Y560 overheating and shutting down

Hi!

Update: I went into windows power manager (in the bottom row, next to the clock) and I've set my Ati Radeon to "Optimize for lifespan" while it was previously set to "Maximum performace".

The current under load temperature was 76 (in the same time that it normally took to reach 90), with no siginificant performance drop.

Still have to do the thermal paste.

Re: Y560 overheating and shutting down

Great success!

I have achieved great results in idle and under load temperatures, just by cleaning up the dust from the fan and heatsink.  There are pictures below on how and what I did and here are the results:

CPU - old idle temp ~60 degrees, now its 45-50 degrees (depending on the core)

GPU - old idle temp ~55 degrees, now ~46 degrees

CPU - old under load temp ~92 degrees, now 53-38

GPU - old under load temp ~97 degrees, now 56

Same game as before, but before also had cooling station on, now its off. Cant belive the improvement!

The drops are AMAZING! And this is before thermal paste!

Procedure

First remove the battery and unplug http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/826/dscf4446u.jpg/

These are the areas you want to focus on http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/855/dscf4441s.jpg/ and http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/337/dscf4439k.jpg/ and http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/337/dscf4440o.jpg/

You can see, they are absolutely filthy!

Now, you clean this with those baby ear/nose thingys. Why? If they are soft enough not to hurt a child and leave fiber, they are good enough for your pc! So do this http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/859/dscf4443j.jpg/ this http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/15/dscf4442m.jpg/ and this http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/85/dscf4448v.jpg/

Untill you get this: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/42/dscf4449y.jpg/ and this http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/855/dscf4444x.jpg/

See how cleaner that looks!

Re: Y560 overheating and shutting down

Thanks for this. Is it possible that you can do a noob-friend tutorial on this? How do I go on about cleaning the heatsink and the dust from the fan? I have this problem where the once the GPU hits ~82 C, the laptop just freezes. If you can do a tutorial, it would rally help me out and many other people that have the same problem. Thanks!

Hi! This is the way I did it, but if you'd like, I can always try and make a video of it. Just let me know.

Cleaning the IdeaPad y560 fan, warranty

My laptop is overheating and I'm looking for a solution ever since. None of the software/bios updates works. The only methods I haven't tried yet is manual cleaning of the fan, reason I was holding back is the warranty. Will I lose it when i open up my pc and clean it up? Or should i give it to the service so they can do it themself?
