I am turning to the community to find out if anyone has installed 16GB of memory in their Y580. Lenovo's manual and website says that 8GB is the maximum supported, but some posts have indicated that it might support 16GB. I need to hear from someone who has actually tried 16GB of RAM in their Y580 as to whether it worked as this is the only thing holding me back from purchasing the Y580.

According to Crucial on their site the max is 8 GB for the Y580
And since Lenovo says the same,i would go with that.
However i would be interested to hear otherwise.

Compuram has on their website, that the Y580 does take 16GB of ram and seeing they do take payment via PayPal, it would be stupid of them to sell you something which they would have to refund under paypal's strict "not as discribed" policy. + they have also stated that the Y570 take 16GB and it does take 16GB if what others who have posted here is true.

Biztek,
if you do try the 16 GB and it works,
please let us know as it will be of interest to others here.

Will do. Right now I am deciding between the Y580 and the dv6tqe from HP. Both machines have their quirks. I like the Lenovo the best but the 8GB limit was holding me back. I like the HP for the matte display. If I get the Y580 I will definitely be trying the 16GB Memory and will repost here unless someone else beats me to it.

I found a user in another forum that said his friend successfully installed 16GB in his Y580. I am trying to find out where he purchased it from to get a confirmation.

I am happy to say that I just recieved my Y580 laptop and it IS WORKING with 2x8GB 1600Mhz memory sticks!!!
Here is a print screen for my system:
I oredered these memory sticks: G.SKILL 16GB (2 x 8G) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory Model F3-1600C10D-16GSQ from http://bit.ly/OMC3F1
By the way, I called Lenovo support and they said that it won't support 16GB... They should know better!
Thanks for the help!

You might want to run memtest or something just to check that all that memory is working properly, just in case there is e.g. an issue with the BIOS or memory controller that makes 16GB unstable.
