Y580 mSATA speed

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased the new lenovo Y580 laptop, and I have a question that I have not been able to find the answer to. I was wondering what the connection speed for the mSATA slot is. I know that the normal SATA hard drive connection is 3gb/s, but I was hoping that the mSATA port is 6gb/s, which makes a big difference for SSD's. If anyone can answer this question I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,

Taylor

Re: Y580 mSATA speed

Thank you very much for the help yigit. I was also wondering if there was an online version of the manual you are talking about, because my laptop didn't even come with one... If you could post the link, that would be great!

thanks again,

Taylor

[ Edited ]

Yes ... I installed a SandForce controller base SATA III SSD in my Y580 and it is operating in 6G mode. When I put the same mSATA SSD card in my Y560 I get SATA II 3G speeds.

I use mSATA for OS and 500GB/7200 HDD for data. Super fast boot and program load times.

Here are CrystalDiskMark numbers for SATA III mode in Y580

466.2   189.6

391.9   186.0

30.27   73.54

124.0   181.7

and here are numbers when the same SSD is installed in Y560 at SATA II mode

249.8   185.6

224.1   182.1

14.23   24.15

125.0   173.0

I think Y480 should give similar results.

For Specs refer to www.lenovo.com/psref

Re: Y580 mSATA speed

Which SSD did you use? You have your system set up just like I would like to set up mine.

Re: Y580 mSATA speed

I used MyDigitalSSD 128GB mSATA - SandForce controller based.

Re: Y580 mSATA speed

Hi,

I have the Lenovo Y580 with i7-3610qm processor.

I've verified the main and optical drive speeds using a sandisk extreme sata3/6gb/s drive:

Main bay operates at 6gb/s while optical drive bay is capped at 3gb/s. Let me know if your y580s are different from mine.

I have a question on msata port if it can operate at 6gb/s/sata 3 mode? or are there only particular msata ssd brands that can do this.

Thanks!

Re: Y580 mSATA speed

all recent SSDs will work in 6 Gb sata.

you are aware, that you won't be able to notice a difference between the same SSD in 3Gb and 6Gb mode in any situation other than benchmarks and transferring data... to another SSD. There's absolutely no point in worrying about that. It's a world of difference between hdd and ssd, but in case of everyday performance difference between SSDs the difference is negligible.
