@corlis :smileyhappy:

Good question, deserves an answer! Yes, I also bought the Lenovo Y510 IdeaPad. I installed Windows XP SP3 and everything worked once I read the Lenovo forums here to understand the ins and outs. It's not so difficult to install XP too, thanks to Lenovo for posting all the hardware drivers needed to use Windows XP Professional.

Here are the links to be of help:

1) forums.lenovo.com/faq

2) forums.lenovo.com/AHCI driver

3) forums.lenovo.com/SP3

4) forums.lenovo.com/HD

Don't forget, before deleting or reformatting your Lenovo hard drive, back it up, so you can restore everything back, when you decided to sell it to someone else, etc...

If you use Acronis True Image Echo Workstation software, you can backup the Lenovo HDD without every needing to first boot up the PC. Just insert the Acronis bootable media into the CD/DVD unit, and your get the option to individually or everything at once method allowing you to backup all the individual Lenovo partitions including the hidden one used for the Lenovo restore such as on an USB HDD.

What do you think?

Re: replace vista with XP

On the same subject, I just installed Windows XP on the Lenovo D: drive, and I'm trying to install the NVIDIA video driver for XP (L3VDO13US24.exe).  After extracting some files, it starts the installer then tells me it "could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware."  I've installed some of the XP drivers already, the ones I have left to do are: bluetooth, touchpad, hotkeys, energycut, and card reader.  Can anyone help me?

(Also, this is probably related, but I can't fix my screen resolution, everything looks squat.)

Re: replace vista with XP

Ok I've finished downloading all the drivers except touchpad and nvidia.  Here are the errors I am getting:

touchpad: "Directory does not exist: XP32\Setup.exe"
nvidia: same problem as above.  Extracts some files, starts installer, then gives error: "could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware."

Can someone who has installed XP on the y510 tell me what I am doing wrong?  Or if there are confirmed alternate drivers I could use instead?

Re: replace vista with XP

Thanks!  The touchpad and Intel links worked perfectly (my screen resolution isn't so sad anymore, yay).  However, even with a modified INF file, the installer for the NVIDIA driver you linked gave the same error.  :smileysad:

Re: replace vista with XP

Just s planned. if Intel graphics helped it means you do not have nVidia inside. Please read your configuration carefully in future.

Re: replace vista with XP

I have recently purchased a Y530-300 and wish to install XP on it.

I had a look on the Lenovo site for XP drivers for the Y530, but couldn't find them.

Will the XP drivers for the Y510 work with the Y530?

thanks

Jay

Try http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/lenovo/Drivers/list.aspx?CategoryID=671

For some reason the Y530 drivers can't be found by following the "Support" link from the Lenovo homepage.
