Re: IdeaPad order / shipping discussions

Thanks for the link, Nonny.  It looks like the truth changed from when I ordered my S10.

Well, I guess that's one way to put it if it makes you feel better although there is a reason that item #16 has been in Bill Morrow's forum FAQ for donkey's years.  Information in the *books has historically been more accurate/reliable than the website, and that's nothing new or surprising when you consider that the website is constantly being updated while the *books come out periodically.

Re: IdeaPad order / shipping discussions

I suppose I put too much stake in the Lenovo name.  I'm in the US Army as a health information systems officer (analagous to a Chief Information Officer for a hospital - the Army always has to come up with its own name for things).  They are sending me through grad school and that's why I was looking for a netbook.  In past assignments, we've purchased a lot of Lenovo  products(the tablets are excellent) and have had a lot of success with Lenovo.  When I dug through the Lenovo web site and couldn't find spec sheets on the S10, I took it on faith that what the sales rep said  was accurate.

Live and learn, I guess.  I don't want to come across as trying to threaten Lenovo - that is not my intent, but how can I NOT take this into consideration when I have to make future buying decisions at my next hospital?

Well, for one thing, if you're buying for a hospital, I assume you won't just be picking up the phone and dialing 1-800-givemesomerandomsalesrep.  Also, now you're aware of the information resources and opinions available not only here but also at TPF, at NBR and at the S10 forum

Nonny,

Thanks for the very infomative link.  Since I'm a first time Lenovo customer, I never thought to look at the Thinkpad forum (and never saw that FAQ), since I was ordering an IdeaPad.  I had no idea there was such a "book."   Perhaps the relavent info could be added to the IdeaPad FAQ?

In the FAQs belonging to this forum, the first is;

Q: Where can I find listings of current and withdrawn system machine type models and specifications?
A: They are available for download here - > ftp://ftp.Software.ibm.com/pc/pcinstitute/psref/

Thanks, Andy.  I came straight to this forum and read the FAQs here.  I missed those.

Re: IdeaPad order / shipping discussions

[ Edited ]

I think the truth is still nebulous, and it needs to be sorted soon or Lenovo is leaving themselves open for a false advertising suit.  I'm not a hater and I'm not planning on canceling my order.  I'd just like to point out that this is a terrible way to do business and,  especially, to garner repeat business.  If I'm using a Lenovo product, it's in my best interest to tell the company when they're screwing up so they continue to stay financially healthy and continue to support my product.

I ordered a black IdeaPad S10 during the initial rush, before the ordering link was pulled.  At that time, the specs supposedly included bluetooth.  If you check out the S10 product page as of this writing, it still touts bluetooth.

http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:category.det...

The recently updated ipbook shows no bluetooth on my ordered model, or, indeed, on any models.  But in addition to bluetooth's bullet point on the product page, there is actually an XP Home bluetooth driver available for download from Lenovo support.  What gives?

Here are a few other unanswered questions surrounded by much confusion:

- Is the RAM upgradable to 1.5GB or 2GB?  Is there actually 512MB soldered to the board or not?

- Is the hard drive upgradable or can it not be removed?

- Will the Linux version ship with the same wireless adapter?  Will a Linux driver be made available for OS switchers?

- In the shipping versions is the black model all black as it is in some images, is it two-tone or is just the battery white?

I'm not troubled by pre-ordering, and don't mind waiting as production capacity and shipping dates shift.  It's part of the game.  I do mind shifting specs.  And I *really* dislike the current situation: a company sells many pre-orders, doesn't keep its sales and support groups informed so they can be ready for individual questions, then completely lags in publicly answering questions about the spec when they arise all over the web immediately after product launch.  Mark Hopkins, you're a hero for taking the task on, but you shouldn't have to be.  It should have never come to this point.

All,

I'm working to get a clear picture on S10 ships and do plan to provide an updates as the information becomes available.

For those that have seen  missed Sept dates reflect Nov estimated ship dates -  what can happen is that when an estimated ship date has passed and is updated, it can reflect current lead time as if you placed a new order today.  Outlook today would be more than 8 weeks on a new order which is why it's presently not for sale on the web.

Actual ship dates for existing orders should occur sooner - we often provide overly conservative dates and ship well within them.  Present outlook is that shipments should begin later this month.

I understand that this can be frustrating, but would ask that you bear with us a bit longer on these...

Best regards,

Mark
