A31 HDD Largest Drive Supported

Hello,

I am currently using an (IBM) Hitachi Travelstar 80GB HDD (HTS541080G9AT00). I want to install a 160GB drive (Travelstar HTS541616J9AT00).

OS is Win XP/Pro SP1.

Various drive manufactures / suppliers say the drive is compatible/supported. IBM support says 80GB max. Can anyone clarify for me.

Thanks in advance.

Re: A31 HDD Largest Drive Supported

Frank, welcome to the forum,

go ahead with the 160GB drive, (bigger if you wish), you'll have no problems. The only reason that the support site has 80GB as max is because that was the largest drive they offered at that time. 160GB drives may not have been in existence at the time and the manuals etc. don't get updated.

Hope this helps

Andy

Re: A31 HDD Largest Drive Supported

I strongly suggest upgrading to XP SP2, because you might run into issues with space over 137GB with SP1.

BTW, I had 250GB in one of my A31p machines and it worked well, there is no (known) BIOS limit for these units when it comes to hard drives.

Cheers,

George
