I am putting this down as WONTFIX for me personally and marking using a USB floppy as an accepted solution.
Chances are pretty slim that I ever will go back to a fresh Win XP install anyway. Happily using Fedora Linux now instead. I do miss a few Thinkvantage technologies, but I am getting so much more linux power that I think its worth it! And a superb boot time.

itpastorn,
I appreciate your reasons, but have unmarked the thread as solved because technically speaking it isn't; as yet, in this thread, no one has tried the proposed fix and been able to confirm that it is a solution.
Maybe someone in the same circumstances will try this and be able to confirm, or even deny, that it is the solution.
Thanks for understanding
Andy
