Thinkpad G40 memory upgrade

hello,

I hope this is the right place to ask some Q about the IBM thinkpad G40 .. My son bought a second hand G40 some years back. It had/has only 256M memory. Now I want to upgrade the memory and I scanned the relevant web pages of Lenovo. Apparently the memory should be PC2100 or maybe PC2700 becasue of PC2100 availability ? (DDR)

Now a cpu-z run on that laptop says the memory is PC2300 (142Mhz) so what gives ? Has this been put in to be on the safe side or ?

and an additional Q .. can memory modules be mixed ? ie can I add a 512M PC2100 sodimm to get 768M ? or do I need to remove the original 256M and go for 2x 512M ?

TIA

Re: Thinkpad G40 memory upgrade

Welcome to the forum!

Your machine can run PC2100/2700 memory, and you can combine it, it will always run at PC2100 speed regardless of anything else. It can be mixed, no questions asked.

If the G40 is Celeron powered, it will take up to 1Gb (2x512Mb) of RAM. If it's Pentium 4-powered, you can install up to 2Gb of RAM.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

George

Thank you George,

I was rather confused by the cpu-z findings on that PC2300 memory type.:smileysurprised:

The lenovo web pages related to the G40 mention this PC2100/PC2700 compatibility but claim the 2100 variant is no longer available (at Lenovo I presume?) Over here I still can buy both type.

Thanks for the info on the "mixing" .. Still wonder if I just can plug in 1Meg  additional as cpu-z flags my cpu as being a 2.6Mhz Pentium 4 (Hope this thing can be trusted :smileyhappy:)

cheers

Willy

Re: Thinkpad G40 memory upgrade

You most certainly can plug in an additional 1Gb. And what a difference it will make...

Re: Thinkpad G40 memory upgrade

Sorry to bump this thread but I'm completely at a loss as to what type of memory to choose for my G40 upgrade .. not seeing the woods anymore 'cos of the trees !

OK .. the basic aim is SO-DIMM 266 (PC2100) CL2.5 200 pin or eventualy PC2700 same specs (cpuz as well as siw flag the present memory as 256 M Infineon PC2300, clocks at 133 or 142Mhz)

Unfortunately .. if I choose Kingston brand  my choice is limited to the KTM-TP0028 type (expensive here!) .. BUT :smileyhappy: if I do a search on my local webshops I'm just avalanched by so-dimm's 266 200 pins .. and price ranges going from roughly 15€ to well over 100€ for ONE 512M module .. hello? what am I missing here ?

I read some US site where they claim the memory needs some "specials chips" to work on the G40 but they also claim max memory is 2Gig whereas the Lenovo specs say "max 1Gig" which IMHO jeopardizes their reliability (is there a different type G40 for the US <=> Europe?)

So my Q: Will any type so-dimm 266/333 200 pin work in this machine ? or am I at the risk of buying something that I will not be able to use ? (keep in mind that return policies in Europe are as well as non-existent :smileyhappy:)

Re: Thinkpad G40 memory upgrade

ibmsysop,

What MODEL G40 do you have?

Check here for memory requirements and  compatibility: http://www.crucial.com/uk/

As George mentioned above, the Celeron based G40s are limited to 1GB of RAM, the P4 based systems will accept 2GB.

Regards,

James

Thanks for the info

My G40 is one from the 2388 series with a P4, 2.6Ghz ...

I already found the site you mention but did not explore it completely .. now I see that the "equivalent" memory proposed for the G40 is a "no brand" type ? tagged under their own label ? (max 512 Meg)

It still does not solve my Q aka "can I use any type/brand of memory that complies to the specs ?"

Plse note that once again it is mentioned that max mem is 1gig .. ??? the only place where the info about supporting 2Gig is this forum ?

As a logical consequence this very web site does not provide any options/suggestion for a 1gig so dimm with the correct specs ..

Now I'm absolutely confused

Edit:
so this module should fit as well ?

Yes sir, that module will fit. I have the same module in P4 equipped A31Ps and T30s, works a treat.

I'm sorry Crucial isn't up to speed on what memory the G40 series can use, they're very conservative at times and will only post what the manufacturer has approved, other times they'll show the "latest" info, go figure.

Regards,

James
