wdg, welcome to the forum,
Is the display a little pinkish when you first start the system? If so this is an indication that the backlight, ccfl, is failing and that it may be time to start looking around for a new display.
If not, please tell us more.

Two ways to go about this:
a) Get a replacement panel - a genuine one with a FRU number, not an aftermarket piece of trash.
b) Change the backlight (CCFL) in your current LCD. This is a cheaper way out, but the procedure itself is quite finicky.
Do bear in mind that any WSXGA+ LCDs from T60/61/p, R61, T500, R500 and W500 will work in your ThinkPad.
