Z61e: Combo drive not found

[ Edited ]

I have a Z61e that had a bad (or so I thought) cd/dvd combo drive.  I have replaced the drive, and windows says it is working, but the file manager and my computer does not see anything if I put a cd in.  I can get it to read a DVD from Media player, but when I check the DVD with the file manager, it see nothing.  Other programs don't see the drive, although when I first replaced the drive, things were working fine.  It's almost as if Windows has "forgotten"that the drive is there.

Anybody know what I can do?

Re: Z61e: Combo drive not found

Perhaps a corrupt IDE driver?  Uninstall it device manager.  Windows will reinstall it when rebooted.  PC-Doctor or System Toolbox if you've done your updates yield any information about the problem?

Re: Z61e: Combo drive not found

I had that problem with my Z61e. I called technical support and I was told to do a system restore ie

  • Back up
  • Restart
  • Boot-up
  • Press F11 repeatedly in boot-up (I think it was F11 - can't read my own writing)
  • Go to Rescue and recovery
  • Do a full factory restore
  • Don't keep any settings
That sorted the problem

That's just what I ended up doing.  I don't know why this is a problem or why it's doing it.  I have Linux on an ancient Sony Vaio and it runs like a champ.  I'm beginning to hate Windows....:smileymad:
