I've had this laptop for over 2 months now and that **bleep** port has perplexed me ever since I took the computer out of the box. The frustrating thing is no answer from Lenovo support would love to have the eSata option for backup!

Mate I don't know which cable and connection you are using but as everyone else has found, a standard esata connection won't physically fit into the esata/usb port on the G570.
If you have been successful in finding a connector and cable (that's not a usb connector) could you post a picture of it and supply some details of the brand, model and where to purchase it?
Cheers

this is indeed a combo port, i also have a g570
this is the port:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ESATAp
you can use both esatap cable and esata cable with this port, if you use esata cable or if your external hard drive does not support esatap then you will have to power it with a separate usb cable or with a dc power.
note that laptop can power out only 5v and not 12v like a desktop computer, so you may still have to use external power depends on your drive.

well, i just received my esatap cable today, and i can declare it doesn't fit the port.
This leads me to believe this is a regular usb port and the reason it looks different is because stupid lenovo wanted to save some bucks by using a shared platform between this model and other models that do support esatap. bad user experience!
