EXTREMELY poor performance on n200 notebook

My n200 laptop takes about 7 minutes to boot up, in addition it continuously freezes up. Under the Windows tools, I checked the hardware performance and the results show that there is excess paging on the hard disk. I was wondering if anyone else is having these problems? Have received no help so far..

Possible causes for laggy computer:

Input and output is the slowest component of all computer systems. This includes disk access, which is especially slow compared to processing speeds. If you have identified that it is your hard drive that is the bottleneck, then you could try:

1. Defragment your hard drive using AusLogics Disk Defrag - this gets more files defragmented than Vista's built in one.
2. Clean up temporary files, and make sure that you have at least 20% free disk space for optimal performance
3. Increase your system memory to at least 2 GB will decrease the need to dump memory pages to disk
4. Upgrade your hard drive to a high speed 7200rpm drive.

There's another one tip.
Try copying something from C: to D: - when copying open task manager and watch for the CPU utilization and report plz if it is 100% when copying.

I have Lenovo 3000 N100 0768-HCQ .I am also suffering from poor performance problem.I  have Vista.My Laptop takes minimum 15 minutes to boot. For solution I took laptop to original factory setting (advise given from customer care IBM)As solution given by Mr. tseedmund I already perform 1 and 2 steps but problem is not solved.

So, once again.
Try copying something from "C:" to "D:" and check for CPU utilization in task manager during copying - whether it's 100% or not.

Hi, sorry was away from internet access for a while. I tried what you asked, the CPU uilization remains under 20% but fluctuates between 2/3 to about 18%. Generally towards the lower side. Look forward to hearing your response. Other's i know don't have problems with their laptops, seems to be a lenovo thing.

Sorry for tone - it was for those who only post questions and not responding for mine as I was trying to get information.
So my guess was related to the corrupted driver of disc controller. Could be found in device manager. if at any tab there's an "PIO" mode (PIO-4/3/2/1), then delete this device and reboot. The problem'll be fixed.
Otherwise your laptop's slow work can be affected by fragmentation, great number of unnecessary autorun progs or viruses. So defrag, check autorun (be carefull with items marked by Microsoft - not recommended to switch off) and viruses. Report if it helped.
Also check for CPU speed - therewere reports somewhare for unexpected CPU speed lost affected by unlnown reasons (the owner got his laptop replaced finally).
Also empty recycle bin, temp folder and internet tmp folder (CCleaner is helpful) and delete restore points if no need in them.

No problem, i can understand your frustration. Anyway, I checked for the corrupted disk controller, unable to find it so am assuming all is fine from this aspect.

In terms of the fragmentation, Windows has a feature to check the performance of your computer, the results reported excess fragmentation. I have reduced all programs in system tray to bare minimum i.e. Lenovo programs, anti-virus and msn. However, there is still excess fragmentation. I am continuously defragmenting to help the computer run faster. It is still very slow.

Could you please clarify what you mean by autorun programs?

I have up to date symantec antivirus and windows defender for spyware removal.  I don't know if this helps but Physical memory usage is always above 70% even when idle, does this mean anything?

I seriously think this problem is only a lenovo problem, in terms of hardware as well, one battery catch has fallen off and the other one is loose so i can't take off the battery if i wanted to.

Strange. Try uninstalling Lenovo software one by one and check which one causes such a behaviour.
Still think it's virus issue... I'm using NOD32 - think it's the best antivir ever, but it's IMHO.
However, would you kindly make two screenshots ? 1) - "Processes" tab of your  task manager; 2) - "System perfomance" tab of task manager.
Also posting screenshot of your "logon" tab of Autoruns software may help. You may PM me these if you want.
Interesting case - I'm very curious about it.
