I am not able to type in my password nor get F1 or F12 buttons to work (or Lenovo Care button), and can't get to BIOS. I can use the touchpad but that's all. I can turn the computer off, restart, and put it in sleep.
I did use the Rescue and Recovery Startup Disk I made and noted that kbdclass was running, kbdhid was stopped. It seems like a hardware problem, but I have no way of checking the devices that I can figure out.
I hooked up an external keyboard via USB and it didn't even light up.
What now?

What does it mean that a USB external keyboard doesn't work either?

I also facing similar prolem. I can't write anything using keypad even user's password or even can't use touch pad. I can only shut down/restart using mouse on Windows 7.
But strange thing is after some shut down/restart, everything is working just fine.

I removed the keyboard and attached the external USB keyboard, but it still didn't work. The connector seemed tight.
As before, the buttons don't work either.
Also, as before, a USB wireless mouse works, as does the touchpad. It asked me if I wanted to back up when I started, and it seems to be doing that.
Is there a possibility that this is a software problem? Is there something I could try with the Rescue/Recovery startup disk?

With the aid of your advice, the excellent videos on removing and re-inserting the strip cover and keyboard, and the diagrams in the manual, I was able to put in a keyboard bought online for $13 (incl. shipping) and get my laptop working again. Many thanks! I am relieved it wasn't the motherboard.
