Lenovo N 100 Series Model 0768AQ Model

[ Edited ]

I have been using this model for around 3 years. Today while working on a presentation in Powerpoint all of a sudden my battery died.......

My laptop got shut down.

I tried running the laptop by plugging into ac adapter but it wont turn on. The battery indicator on the front panel shows battery icon as orange and even it is not turning up wih ac power. I tried replacing the battery with my friends same laptop model and my laptop started. But the battery was not charging even with the ac power. and even the laptop is not booting with ac power on when i removed the battery. I am just confused what has happend. I consulted the IT Guy of my company who told it might be power problem ( IC must have gone bad ) . Please help me ......  he even told it can also be a motherboard problem..... Pls help asap

Thanks in advance

You need to replace your battery!

Please try this:

With GOOD battery in and laptop plugged in, boot up and enter bios setup. (F1 key at Lenovo screen)
Set to Default. (Exit tab, Load Setup Defaults)
Save and Exit.
If this does not change anything, enter bios setup again,
remove battery, wait 30 seconds, and replace battery.

(It is best to do this in bios setup so if it does stop,
you are not damaging hard drive.)

If it just stops when you remove battery, post back.

When I got my N100, used, I installed a new battery, and it would not charge.

The solution, for mine, was a "hard reset" of the bios. One year ago, and still

working fine. "Set to Defaults" in the bios setup (F1 key at boot) did not solve

the problem, but please try it before anything else.

On a desktop computer, you can simply remove and replace a jumper on the motherboard

to accomplish this

On a laptop, the battery must be removed, or in this case, "shorted". This is done by crossing

the two leads to the battery for about 5 seconds with a metal object, like a paper clip.

This is because the battery is Non Removeable. Why, I do not know!

The battery is a small coin cell with two silver colered leads.

There is no guarantee that this will fix Your laptop, but if you want to try it, here are some steps.

The laptop must be disassembled until the Top Cover is removed. Then you can access

the battery to short it. After, Reassemble, enter bios setup at boot, and Set to Defaults and Save and Exit.

There are very good service videos for this model, located HERE

Look under System Disassembly/Reassembly for a comprehensive video (all parts

starting with battery), or FRU Removals/Replacements for each individual video.

Watch each video, starting with Battery, all the way to Top Cover.

(Top cover MAY have one screw NOT shown on the video, it is on top side under

keyboard area).

Then short the battery, Reassemble, Set to Default, and try it out.

Also, the steps are described in the Hardware Maintenance manual from HERE

for those who can not watch the videos for some reason.

Look under "Removing and replacing a FRU".

If you are not comfortable taking your laptop apart, hire someone to try this.

If it does not work, the motherboard may need to be replaced.

I have wrote about this before, and thought I would try to make a more

extensive post on the subject, I hope it may help someone.

And for those trying to bypass or reset bios passwords, this WILL NOT clear them.

Only Lenovo service can do this.

Re: Lenovo N 100 Series Model 0768AQ Model

I am stuck with the problem. Took the laptop to a repair shop and was advised as there was some problem with southbridge it will be better to replace the motherboard which costs about Rs. 8000 ( $170 ). I bought the laptop for around $250 and dont think i should go for the motherboard replacement.

I tried the laptop with a charged battery from another same model laptop and it worked fine !! only the charging issue was there. It wont get charged. Otherwsie, no issues with the laptop.

Is there any other solution for alternate power solution i can use my laptop with. I dont need to move my laptop from my desk as i work around 10 hours on same laptop without moving.

I dont understand the fact the service enginner told that the southbidge is mal functioning  -if its not working properly how its working on the battery power fine !!!!

Any advise will be highly appreciated.........

Bye

Did you get a new battery? Sounds like that would fix it!
