N200 0769 Windows XP and Windows system file checker problem

Hi all the system I have is as follows
3000 N200 0769-E2G
Windows XP Pro

As part of system maintenance I recently attempted  a windows system file checker by going to My Computer > (C: > Properties) > Tools > Error Checking 'Check Now'

I selected both the options and then was told it would only perform the task once I had rebooted my laptop which was fine anct perfectly normal, I rebooted the system it started loading up but presented me with the following message

Checking file system C:
The type of file system is NTFS
Cannot open volume for direct access
Windows has finished checking the disk

It then loads to the Welcome Screen.

However, every time I start or reboot the system the computer goes through exactly this same process.

From the message itself and having done some Google searches I'm under the impression that something / 3rd party software is using / monitoring / checking the C: which means that Windows system error checking is unable to run.  I also presume that because it hasn't run the first time, for each reboot Windows recognises this and keeps trying to run an error check only for something to be using the volume?

Do I presume this to be some of Lenovo's utility software, and also has this been experienced in the past from other users?

Also the Lenovo security centre seems to be quite strict, each time I initially booted up the machine I was asked if I want to create a windows password that will be user to sign a user in at the windows welcome screen.  I was then given another screen asking for either windows login or finger print reader.  I entered a password at the first stage but just declined the fingerprint / password 2nd screen and told it not to ask me again.

I thought I'd then be able to go into the user accounts area and remove the password from my login name, this goes okay until the next reboot when Lenovo security software informs me the password has changed and to verify this (or something along those lines).

My question is, can I get away with not having any form of password when booting into windows, I dont really want to create a user password at the welcome login screen but it seems I HAVE to, otherwise I will always get the security program screen at every boot up?

Thanks,
Michael

Re: N200 0769 Windows XP + check disk not running / 3rd party software conflict???

Sorry to bump the thread but it seems nobody knows what 3rd party / lenovo software is preventing system file checker (check disk) from running at boot up. Or at least if poeple do know they're keeping it to themselves!

Thanks in advance,
Michael

Hi.
If you use Vista, then it's clear to me.
Thisi is caused by UAC of vista - it prevents direct access for HDD. So turn it OFF before rebooting.

Hi skripatch from your post I'm not sure if you thought that perhaps I may have been using Vista, however as stated in the title of the post and the initial thread, I'm using XP Professional.

On the other hand you may have recognised that I was using XP Pro but still think that UAC could be directly accessing the disk, by UAC I take it your meaning user account /access control?

Thanks,
Michael

Sorry - my bad really.
Missed that piece - thought tere was only model information =) *confused*
Regarding UAC - it's a known issue that you can't perform  a full disk scan in some cases without disabling UAC (usually starting disc scan with administrator privilegies helps, but not always).
Regarding your case - never heared such a thing in non-Vista systems.

Maybe you use built-in encryption or some specific encryption software?...

I've never know for it to happen either.  As for the UAC I should also have thought before posting, the UAC is only available in Vista anyhow isn't it?

I've not added any form of encryption / hard drive ptorection software onto the machine.  Howwver there must be something stopping it.  I was half expecting some response from Lenovo as well, I did notice there is  Lenovo moderator on here?  Or do they just filter out the good/bad guys?

Yes, only in Vista. I've already said that I missed the part where was written "XP PRO", because I'm opening all new threads simultaneosly and do not read particular theme - I start reading the post itself. It is told "XP PRO" also at the beggining of the post but I missed because thought there was only machine Part Number in that part.
About moderators to say - they're here, but they're very busy. Just read through this thread - 10-30 new messages every day. And I think they do it only on kind of enthusiasm - just as I do, so they also have to work somwhere else.
I'm sure you'll get your answer, but you'll have to wait a bit.
Most of problems are solved here without moderator's efforts.

Try this - just look what boots with the system - maybe you'll find the guilty application.

Hi and thanks for the reply.  I will have a look through that software.  I can appreciate what your saying about mod responses.  Just thought they may have a quick reply either to know why the issue is occuring or they would know what programs were running on the disk in the background.

Did also think other forum members may have perhaps experienced the same / similar issues?

Thanks,
Michael

Yes, some Lenovo employees do read and post to this forum.  Mark is quite active, and several others post as well.  In addition, there are lurkers who just read without making public comments although sometimes they ask the mod team to either gather more information or pass along advice.

However, here are the expectations of their participation from the Welcome message:

These communities have been created to provide a high quality atmosphere in which users of Lenovo products and services may share experiences and expertise. While members from Lenovo may participate at intervals to engage in the discussions and offer advice and suggestions, this forum is not designed as a dedicated and staffed support channel.

The bottom line is there's no guarantee that you will get an answer to a question here directly from Lenovo.

On the other hand, you just might!  ;-)
