Notebook battery is not getting re-charged.

Hello everyone

Many thanks for all those of you who have added information to this thread. A few days ago I too have experienced the sudden battery death syndrome with my 3000N100 purchased in July 2006 so it was comforting to see that I am not alone. I have sent Mark a PM. Official warranty is over of course but he may be able to help. Otherwise it has been and continues to be a good machine.

Re: Notebook battery is not getting re-charged.

I am another user who is experiencing problems with the power on my 3000 N100 notebook. (Type 0768-4HG).
The battery suddenly failed after about 15 months, but I was able to keep using it on AC power. However, the notebook has now started turning itself off with no warning, initially at random intervals, but now I cannot even get to the Windows logon page without it powering off (the notebook is about 20 months old now).
Does anyone know what might be causing this problem?

Hi Mark,

I am another unlucky person to have the same problem. All of a sudded the battery stopped charging and I found out this when the laptop (3000 N100) powered off when I pulled the power cord. I sent a PM with Type, Model and serial #. Please let me know if you want more information. Should I PM you my address also? Please do the needfull.

I also tried the battery tool from the support site but it said it was not able to find the bar code automatically.

One more thing, I purchased this PC in June07 and lenovo site is showing warranty expired, why is that? warranty is for 12 months right?

Thanks

Re: Notebook battery is not getting re-charged.

your warranty status depend on whether you got the Laptop from a dealer or directly from Lenovo.com... if its the former, then you have to tell the customer support that and show them the original Proof of Purchase.

Re: Notebook battery is not getting re-charged.

gdarisi,

wjli2 is right and offers fair advice.  If you purchased from a reseller, some of the warrany may have run with the unit sitting on a shelf in their warehouse or in the store.   The default warranty starts when the box ships from Lenovo, but can be reset with a valid proof of purchase from a legitimate reseller. (a store, not a note from your cousin Bob :smileyhappy:)

If you call support, they should be able to connect you to a warranty entitlement department where you can email a copy of your proof of purchase (or fax it if you wish).

Let me know if you get stuck.

Thanks.

Mark

Re: Notebook battery is not getting re-charged.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for letting me know how to update the warranty. I did fax the receipt and am waiting to get the warranty updated.

Please can you PM the tracking # for the battery shipment once you have it.

Thanks

Re: N100 Battery Suddenly Dead

Hi,

Did Mark provide an answer for this case? I also have the 3000 V100 and since one day in February the computer suddenly stopped receiving power from the battery. Subsequently it showed identical behaviour with the battery level slowly declining to end up a steady 0% after a few weeks. I also noticed another symptom that I have not seen reported here; at the same time that the battery stopped working, the system clock became highly unstable and way slower than real-time. This may indicate that the backup battery is also somehow affected meaning that really it is not the batteries but a controller malfunctioning. For the same reason I am reluctant to buy a new battery and I hope to gain some insight in this forum.

Thank you in advance.

Regards,

Mikkel Jensen

Re: Notebook battery is not getting re-charged.

Wow, I am number 168 - and counting....

I experienced the same problem as my 167 predecessors, only on a T60p:
My battery went dead just 3 (three!) days after warranty ran out. I ordered the ThinkPad in February 2007 and got a note that it was to be shipped to my reseller on March 22, where I picked it up on the next day. On March 25, 2008 I experienced a "cold" shutdown when I took it out of the docking station and was not able to switch it on again until I reconnected it to the power cord. The energy manager told me that the battery was fully loaded (no wonder, after a whole day in the dock) but had an error and should be replaced. The battery of my colleague's T61 worked well when inserted into my T60p, so that seemed plausible.

I called Lenovo immediately, got a call number and the guy on the phone told me, that it should be on warranty and I would be called back the next day. Since that call didn't come the next day until 4:30 in the afternoon, I called them again and was told that the ThinkPad was purchased more than 12 months ago and that the dead battery was my problem. Sorry.

You can probably guess my opinion on Lenovo's customer service after this experience - especially after I found this thread here and discovered that I'm only the last one in a long queue of frustrated users. Lenovo: do you intend to do anything about this, or is it just "normal" now that batteries die after 12 months+? The one in my old T41p is still working after 4 (four!) years - not very long though, but hey!

Fabian

fsc,

For the irrepairable battery messages, your battery may qualify for replacement outside of warranty.   CLICK HERE to go to the page, choose your language and follow the instructions.  These pages will help detect if your battery qualifies and guide you through ordering a free replacement if it does.  No promises, but that is your best bet. :smileyhappy:

NOTE - That page does NOT apply to the Lenovo 3000 models due to the system and battery logic - the software cannot interrogate them the same way.  Wanted to save everyone time who might think Aha! and run over there only to wonder why it isn't working for them. :smileywink:

Majesen,

The 3000 V100 should not have the same symptoms as those with certain N100 systems that are are the majority of those on this thread.   The symptoms on the N100 are that the system will no longer run on battery power even though some level of charge (some random amount 5% , 47%, 78%, etc) will be shown.  If you unplug the AC the machine will power off.

Your symptoms sound more like your AC adapter or the charge circuit on the system board failed, and your system just discharged the battery over time down to 0%.   If you know someone else with a V100, try your battery on their system to see if it will charge. Try using a digital multi-meter to measure the voltage output of the AC adapter - unplug the barrel end and measure the tip and side of the barrel.  You should get 16-20v if it's working.   If you battery works on another system, and the AC adapter has good voltage, you may need a system board for your laptop.

In any event, I can't help you directly on the battery for this if your out of warranty.  Sorry.

Others who have PM'd me,

I'm working through and will try to get caught up again tomorrow.   Thanks!
