Rescue&Recovery not working (Win XP)

I have a following problem. I have Lenovo 3000 N200 0769 BMG since December 2007. A few weeks ago I faced some problems with shut down XP (AwaySch cannot be closed). In net I've found information that I need to upgrade Rescue and Recovery software. I tried to do it. Because it was downloading long time I left laptop running for night. In the morning laptop was turned off: When starting Win XP it is warning "needs to check discs". and during checking "segment file record 131888 is not readible" then laptop hangs. When ignore disc checking it runs to login screen then hangs. When starting Win XP in emergency mode (with F8) it gets black screen. When using Lenovo Care button ThinkVantage starts,I have acces to some not usable options but recovery option hangs laptop. What can I do to restore system? Probably it would be no problem if I have installation disc, but Lenovo policy said it is not necessary because R&R software is delivered with computer. But what to do if it doesn't work?

Sounds like hdd developed some bad sectors. To rule this possibility out I suggest you check event log and check you hdd for bad sectors.

Re: Rescue&Recovery not working (Win XP)

Thank you for advice. This time I could resolve problem by restoring to factory settings. I tried to avoid this because I've lost some files and programs but anyway now XP works. I can't see a tool to check disk under the XP (I was looking at Start/all programs/Accesories/System tools) so I run chkdsk via Start/run/chkdsk and this time program finished all 3 steps(it is success because before recovering computer hangs during proceeding this software)with result: Windows found problems with files system. To repair please run CHKDSK with /F option (repairing). However I'm not sure if this trial don't affect recovery space (which should be hidden for XP). Now I can work and I wouldn't to loose this possibility... Krzysztof
