You need a generic windows xp disk, retail or oem.
Disk from other system will not always work, as you have found out!

Actually, the XP I used is OEM (that's what I got with my system).
BTW, I looked at the Lenovo download area for the Y200, and see that they have renmoved all the special drivers they had for XP, and now the only drivers they have there are for Vista.
So I have to change my plans and try installing the 500GB disk with either Vista or Linux (I'll try Ubuntu).

Or try the new windows 7, it seems very good at hardware detection.

Hi Duck3,
As I write this, I'm downloading in the background: Windows 7, Fedora 11, and Ubuntu 9.10 beta.
Hopefully, one of these would install on the 500GB disk of the Y200.
I'm also trying to get my hands on Windows Vista media, so I could try that also (if all else fails).
